Quiet loads...Gelan is the man you need to talk to. He has developed some subsonic loads for the .300 Whisper and 45.70...affectionately referred to as BLOOMPH loads. Not real sure how far you could load the .223 down and have it still effective though.

I think the ".243 or better" rule is a good one, although out to about 50m a .223 is more than enough calibre for Fallow deer. I have a mate who only uses a .22 Hornet on them when doing feral eradication. In my mind that is pretty much unethical, but to his credit it has always been "one shot, one kill" as he head shoots.

Cheers, Vince

I have loaded subsonic loads for the 30/06 and 243 Win using Imr Trail Boss. This powder was specifically introduced by Imr for reduced loads all the way up to the 458 Win. See Here for the pdf from Hodgdon on Trail Boss.

a silent load for a .223 would be little better than a .22 rimfire although you could use a heavier projectile eg 64 grn vs a 42grn max for the rimfire. the .308 subsonic loads are out there the NZ Hunter magazine built up a .308 and then loaded subsonic for it the info wont be hard to find. thier biggest issue was getting some expansion which they sort of fixed by starting with a 170 grn speer round nose designed for the 30/30 and reaming it/drilling the nose out to look like a pistol round. it got out to about .45cal with that treatment. the other issue is no velocity shock you are basically drilling a hole a bit like using an arrow.
keep playing with the idea it does have merit.

Very Happy Sportsmans guide sells chamber adaptors that allow a 32acp or 32short or 32h&r to be fired from a 30-06,or another for a 308.If that does'nt get your velocity low enough-maybe a sling shot! Very Happy

TRBL, I also saw them in Germany for the .30 M1 and that's a round that could serve well for many purposes IMHO. I've been told that shooting a 32ACP with such an adaptor in a 308 win... you're better of with that sling shot. It seems that the 32 ACP is too small to push the bullet trough that long barreled 308 Win.
But it's sure a nice way when you want to go subsonic and/or reduced.

Very Happy Hi Aloysius-do you have a source for those 30 carbine adaptors?I am interested! Also the 32 acp chambers will take 32 long and 32 h&r magnum rounds! If you reload for any of these-you can adjust the loads accordingly
If I had my own lathe at home-then I would attempt to turn out my own.

Was that 30 m1 garand,or 30 m1 carbine?I did'nt read it correctly.

thanks guys that will give me heaps to chew on ,know enough now to blow myself up for sure ,or not of course all this is useless without a "flashback arrestor" as we call em here because we dare not call them the "s" word the boom from the cartidge is 10 times worse than the crack from going sonic i reckon but in the big calibers makes em more pleasent to shoot .and a shite load cheaper to boot .

Shocked Wow Aloys-I checked up on that "adaptor" and they wanted 141.00 for it,I still can't tell whether that was euro's or USD!Either way they are too expensive for me!I can shoot 32 h&r magnums for alot less and reload them tailored to the individual rifle. Very Happy

It's 70-80 euro...
I had the same conclusion, but I have a lathe at home and one day...
and then I also like to have an adaptor for a .22 LR and a .22 Hornet in the .222 Rem. Once you go that direction I think there is a lot of fun waiting.

Maybe keep wrapping the .410 cartridge till it is a snug fit in the 12g chamber mate? Laughing Laughing Laughing

yeah I thought of that. it wouldnt be very reloadable afterwards though and without any barrel the velocity wouldnt be very good either.
