Yesterday I was working as a Range Officer at the local gun club when two guys from New Jersey drove in and asked to join the club. They wanted to sight in their new deer rifles. I pointed out that they could submit an application and pay the dues, but needed to go through an orientation class before becoming members and using the club ranges. I really felt bad because they drove a long time to get to the club. Then I got an idea.

Our club does allow members to have up to two guests at the range if they pay for a daily guest pass ($10 for adults and $5 for junior under age 18). A senior club member agreed to act as the host for these guys and we started the sighting in process at 50 yards. These folks did not have sandbags, targets or earmuffs. They had no idea how to sight in.

Both fellows had .30-06 rifles with expensive scopes and several boxes of ammo. One of the fellows was a better marksman and got on target right away and was thrilled. His buddy was hitting all over a large target and tended to jerk the trigger. We finally managed to get both rifles sighted in and things ended on a positive note. The club is getting two new members. All the best...
Gil

That is very cool. My buddy did that with me at the IPSC bays...

I've done that with others, passed on the "guest" thingy.

Now they realize not all seasoned vets are cranky farts (ahem Bushy...). We want to promote good range stewardship, safety and marksmanship.

Best way we can is to pay it forward. Bet they will too!

Good job on furthering our cause, getting new members and securing the Future of our Shooting Sports, Gil!

+1 on Stovey's comment.

You did the sensible and reasonable thing Gil, and it's paid off in spades with two new members who will no doubt remember the experience.
