Wow did it get cold last night!!! We had -31 f (-35c) didn't get above 0 all day, needless to say I didn't even go out of the house today. I have about 20 pounds of meat to smoke for Christmas but it wasn't going to happen today.

Definitely not the type of weather a 'brass monkey' would venture out in mate.

If there was more ice I would have a fish house on the lake this is perfect weather for catching bottle bass and beer eyes. Oh Well just a matter of time now.

Let me guess you have never been ice fishing. Ice fishing here in the winter is slower action in general than summer fishing. My son bought a new fish house this year it is 8's16" on wheels. Once you pull it onto the ice to where you are going to fish the wheels are able to be disconnected from the frame and boat winches allow us to crank the fish house frame down to the surface of the ice.

These fish houses can be very "comfortable" inside. Some even double as campers in the summer. With the cold winters here in MN ice fishing is a great way to get out of the house for a few hours of even a few days. The bigger fish houses let friends get together an fish. Because of the slower action in the winter many of us like to enjoy a few adult beverages on the ice.

Whether we catch any fish or not it is always said that we did catch bottle bass (beer or whiskey bottle) and beer eyes rather than walleys.

How thick is the ice mate? How do you know it's OK to take a heavy 'ice house' out onto the ice with safety?

I think that year we had 18 to 20 inches of ice, but it was early in the season. Our normal ice pack would be anywhere from 24 to 30 inches. I have been on as much as 48" of ice.

When it comes to ice I am extremely cautious. I watch what others are doing very close I won't go out until I know for sure there is enough ice. I usually end up walking out with the portable fish house during the early part of the season.

WOW...48" of ice is thick and means it's been damned cold. I take it you have an ice auger that you use to bore a hole for fishing and that way you can gauge the thickness of the ice.

If there is 48" of ice on the lake my butt is staying in the house, in front of the fire place!

LOL. If you stay in the house all the time you get cabin fever pretty bad up here.

Yes Vince I have an power auger with the extension on it I could get through 60". Don't need to go through that much but it also means I don't have to bend as far to break through.

You let your buddy go out to the fishing spot in his big four wheeler to find out if the ice is thick enough. If his truck doesn't try to imitate a submarine then you're good to go! Smile

Now that would make life easy mate. I'm surprised that the fish survive without going into some sort of hibernation with the freezing water.

Wiersay Have you ever heard of guys using earth power augers and then just putting the ice auger attachment on the motor??? The TSC Tractore Supply Company has a sale on earth augers with a 43 cc Viper motor and 8 earth auger for 319.00 and that is at least 100.00 cheaper than buying a Viper ice auger. Thoughts????? Inquiring mind wants to know before he forgets what his question was. lmao
