Of all things this moring I look out at the garden and see a wood duck hen walking around in the grass. I watch and watch and here comes a beautiful Drake. I'm thinking this is kind of nice wood ducks in the back yard. The drake walks up to the hen. Stops turns around and starts to walk off. Well the hen would have no part of that so she follows him off to parts unkown. It just goes to show you, some things are universal. When you don't want the female of the species around you can't get rid of them.

I believe that wood ducks are the best looking of all ducks. I have seen a few in the wood along a stream. Mostly we have mallards on the creek. All the best...

The eighteen years I lived in Bucks County, I don't remember ever seeing a wood duck.

By comparison, If you wanted, you could become a wood duck specialist in eastern South Dakota

I have just one bird mounted of the thousands of birds I have shot over the years and it is woodie drake.

Every time I look at that drake I see the shot; it was fall in New Hampshire, with the red, gold and orange bright colored leaves. I was in an Army leopard suit standing next to a small pine, in waist high brush, on the edge of a large beaver pond. The pond was glass smooth, with the reflection of the trees and bright leaves, everywhere on the pond, like a mirror. I looked across the pond and caught a glimpse of the woodie coming over the treetops across the way. He dropped down, over the water, and came straight towards my position. I froze; it was a glorious sight, almost breathtaking. When he was about 40 yards out, the 12 ga A-5 barked and the woodie hit the ground at my feet. He was a perfect drake, all colors and rings, fully filled out. A perfect shot, on a perfect bird, on a perfect day.

On my way home, I stopped at the taxidermy shop, knowing that the movie of that event would be preserved in my memory, with that one bird.
Ed
