ANZAC Day 2020...a very different experience courtesy of the COVID lockdown. All commemoration ceremonies cancelled including the annual march and subsequent reunions. All pub, hotels, restaurants closed, but luckily bottle shops still open. This allows for old mates, both and present, to be toasted and remembered, especially those who are no longer with us...who have passed due to age or who made the ultimate sacrifice in defence of our freedom.

Driveway remembrances were the order of the day with families gathering on the end of their driveway at 5am for the traditional morning Dawn Service. Both the Australian War Memorial and the RSL streaming live a an online service. The streets were alive with the sound of laptop computers and speakers bringing the service to the masses on lockdown. I was asked to play the bagpipes, which traditionally happens at services, for those commemorating in our street.

All in all, a very successful memorial service in hard times. Most importantly, it has re-awakened The ANZAC Spirit in the community, remembering those who gave their present for our future.

and that lone piper was plurry awesome Mate...you did good.
I actually believe this ANZAC day has been a huge sucess in that being locked at home many mnay FAMILIES got into the spirit of the occasion...2 out of 3 houses have hand made poppies out in street,plastic,cardboard,fabric,tin...you name it its out there in pride of place...hopefully next year those younguns will want to do the dawn parade....we didnt last year due to concerns after the CHCH shootings...this year we locked down....next year will be a goodun.
again Mate, you did good...very proud to be your Mate seeing and hearing your pipeing.

Thanks everybody. There are many veterans amongst us here on The Nut and they too are in my mind on this day. ANZAC Day commemorates the joining of two fledgling nations as lifelong comrades in a battle lost by the combined forces of Australia and New Zealand. Whilst this is uppermost in the minds of all Australians and New Zealanders, it is a time of reflection when we remember those of all nations who fought in many conflicts...with many paying the ultimate price.

So, whilst ANZAC Day is an Australian/New Zealand commemoration, remember ALL veterans who served, regardless of where, when or of which nation, and raise a glass in memory of mates still surviving or long passed. And let’s not forget those civilians who were loosely labelled as “collateral damage”...they too are casualties of war.
