sorry, all the books I have have no bullet wieghts less than 200 grain for the 338-06.

Sierra 5 edition second printing book
Hornady sixth edition book

I also checked a older book I have
Lyman 47th relaoding hand book

none of these have any bullets less than 200 grain for the 338-06.

Wool1,
Your request says 338-08 so, taking you for your word, I would think that you could use the data for the 358 Win and at least have an indication of where to start. I would think that a starting load for a 180 in the 358 would get you real close to a starting load for the 338. Then you just work up from there.

If you were talking the 338-06, there is a 180 load shown in our data base right here on the H-N.

The 338-08 or 338 Federal, is nothing more than a 308 winchester necked out to 338. Federal Cartridge Company did nothing more than standardize the old wildcat. I have spoken with Hodgdon Powder Co. and they said it would be a couple of months before they have data because the have just received their presure barrel and haven't formed cases yet. I am chambering it at my shop in my Ultra Lights, but haven't yet chambered it in anything with a longer heavier barrel. With Hodgdon and Alliants input along with my chronograph I think I have started to compile some good data.

Wool1,
Just trying to make sure that we were talking 338-08. I saw a note about the 338 Federal last week and did not look at it, but realized that was probably what you were talking about.

Are you going to put some of your loads on the Reloading Data base, as you get some good shooting stuff figured out?
Ed

Oh, just thought to tell you that I hunted for many hears with a guy that carried a 358 Win in a pre 64 Mdl 70 featherweight. The 358 is a deadly eastern deer gun, so I suspect the 338 version will be pretty fair also.

Would be glad to, I leave for Alaska in 6 days to test the round and my ultra lights on some Caribu and Black Bear. Should be fun.

Report from Alaska. The 338-08/338 Federal worked perfectly. The bullet I used was a 210 gr. Barnes Triple Shock over 44 gr of Reloader 15 in a Winchester case with Winchester Large Rifle primers. With the 20 inch barrel in was running at around 2250-2300 FPS. But it was more than enough for this Black Bear at just inside 150 yards on a spot and stock. This was an early prototype rifle of on ultra light I build, the only problem I had was the finish didn't hold up to Alaska(as you can see in the picture). Minor problem that will be easy to correct. I highly recommend the round.
