Story and pics Part 2

After moving camp to some private land I'm aloud to hunt, I started to look for a nice Mule buck. The first evening was pretty good as I jumped several does, but no bucks seemed to be out. I awoke the next morning to thick fog. I moved very slowly though a cut block on an old skidder trail and for more than two hours, I never saw anything. The moon had been quite bright the night before and I thought maybe they were moving in the evening and at night. I followed the skidder trail though some trees and as I came into a clearing I saw a buck, a small two point. (we count only one side of a rack here in BC) Then another small two point appeared just behind the first one. I then saw the one I shot standing to the right and farther away than the second buck. All I saw was the drop tine and at least three upward facing points. I quickly put the cross-hairs behind his left shoulder and fired. He made two jumps, dropped and had expired by the time I walked up to him.

As nice as the deer is and how pleasant the hunt was, the best part was being able to christen my late Fathers Voere 270 Winchester. He had never taken anything with this rifle before he passed away so it was nice to take a decent buck with it for it's first animal. I think my Dad would have liked that.

Grant,
Sounds like the dream were eclipsed by the reality. Good hunt. Now you have a well stocked larder for the winter.

Great stories and great trophys!

Man I love the deer, I've satisfied my goal of a trashy non-typical but next on my "hope" list is a drop-tine buck! You got a rare one with lots of character for sure.

Seems that deer is around 2.5 years from its body size, to have headgear like that means you have some awesome genetics in that area. I'm very jealous!

Again congratulations on the hunt and thanks for sharing it.

It was a great hunt overall. The moose was 590 lbs hagging weight and the buck was 120 lbs, so the freezer is going to be well stocked this winter.

Dallan, funny thing about the area I got that deer, my hunting partner shot an almost identical buck last year not 500 yards from where I got mine this year. Seems that there was a dominant buck in that area with a drop tine and he's passed his genetics on. I like non-typical bucks also and always hope to take one every year.

Ed, the hunt did eclipse the dreams. It was almost a sad thing that it ended due to being successful early in the hunt. I still had 5 more days to play in the bush. I guess I'll do a few day hunts from home and maybe do a little fall fishing.
(seems like years since I did that)

rrogacki, thanx,
I think we should all share pics and stories of our hunts. It's a good way for all of us to celebrate the great outdoor experiences we have and share our passion with others that have it to.

Couple more shots of the deer.

As I can still harvest two more Mule's this year, I decided to try my luck again today. (I've been doing some of that rare fall rainbow fishing that I almost never take advantage of.)

I came very close to getting that truly big Mule Deer buck this evening. I was working a tree line that bordered a rather large clear cut. As I topped a little ridge I saw several doe's feeding. As they spotted me at the same time, they were a little spooky and started to move off. Just then I saw the big boy who was a little farther up the hill. I figured he would have scored 150+. I tried to move into a position to get a shot, but he was too smart and moved off rather quickly. The only shot he gave me was a long one, about 300 yards, going straight away. I held on the back of his head and let fly. At that point.......he actually ducked. I must have put the bullet right between his antlers just over his head. Oh well, I know where he lives now, and I'll try for him again next weekend.

Sounds like you have a great place to hunt. I sure hope you have good luck on Saturday or Sunday.

This has been one of the most enjoyable hunting seasons I've ever had. I went out for a late afternoon Mule deer hunt about 45 min north of my house. I arrived at 3:15 and started to walk in, I was heading to a make shift ground blind that was between two big downed Spruce trees. The blind overlooks a small gully and just on the other side, several old skidder trails and game trails meet. As I moved quietly towards the blind, I spotted movement through the trees. I started to move painfully slowly towards a spot that I could see or to the blind, which ever came first. I didn't make it to the blind when I saw a doe feeding on the other side of the gully. It was at this point a very nice 3 point walked out to give his girl friend a sniff. I watched this buck for over 20 minutes, but decided to let him walk away, I was hoping to see that big 4 point that I described in my last post. Good to leave a few for seed, he'll be a very nice four point next year.

I apologize for the quality of the picture I took of him. He was standing broad side at about 120 yards and I only had my point and shoot digital camera with me. It only has a 4x optical zoom so this was as good as I could do.

Nice picture! I take pictures as well but use 35mm cameras. My Digital is in the shop right now. If you have the chance, or the $$, get your self a Canon Rebel digital w a 75-300mm lense, works great for nature & sports.

Thanx, I may look into that camera after Xmas, hmmm or maybe hint about it for Xmas...... Wink

Just imagine that picture through the rifle scope, it was very tempting to take him. He stood like that for a very long time after he spotted me reaching for my camera. If that boy only knew just how close he came, he wouldn't hang around to see what was moving across the gully from him.

I hunt from a blind so getting more photo's is alittle simpler.
I'll tell you one thing though, that digital will not tolerate to much cold. I keep a Buddy heater in my blind with me for the camera equipment (and my old bones Very Happy )
