30-30 Marlin? the elk die of boredom? Very Happy Hey, I'm not saying they're bad rifles.....just mine's better Very Happy Very Happy but I've got to agree with the author on this "Note: You can always distinguish a devoted black-timber elk hunter from the average nimrod; he's the one whose rifle wears no scope, leaving him ready for encounters at close quarters.)" Mostly into heavy bush hunting myself.

Thanks for the link 1895SS. An interesting story and a nice prize bull that will be remembered by the hunter for a long, long time. While a long way from a B&C, it is the type of bull I would be happy to find anytime.

Ah, the mighty thutty thutty excels again. That is one big beastie.

Doesn't matter what rifle it is fired from, the 30.30 is a damn fine calibre and quite rightfully earned the name of the greatest deer and hunting calibre to date.

Cheers, Vince

Everyone here knows my favorite hunting rifle. I've made that quite clear. If it hasn't yet sunk in...Winchester Mod 94 .30-30 (Circa 1949). Ease of handling in tight quarters. Speed of shot to shot recovery. Quick target aquisition. Light and well balanced. It can't be beat. It has taken deer, rabbit, elk and one grouse (head shot at 15 yards. Ask my son Very Happy ). I am a timber and brush still hunter. I just would rather take an elk with something heavier then my .30-30.

Hey 1895, I was only joshing ya about the Marlin again. It was a great article and I've dropped moose and bear with a .30-.30 so I'm not seriously slammming anything here. No hard feelings Embarassed

30-30 best deer rifle of all time??? Not so sure about that...the 30-06 has won 2 world wars and has killed a hell of a lot of animals itself.

Asking what *THE* best cartridge is, is a very tough thing to do. Its like What is better, Blondes or Brunettes? Someone will say Redheads LOL. Facts are both cartridges have probably killed more game between them than all other's combined.

The 30-30 predates the '06 by quite a while and were cheaper so more people had them. The '06 caught on like wildfire later on and its longer ballistics capability accounted for a great amount of kills.

What is the best? I have no idea, I just like to shoot'em all and have fun. Each has its own use.
