Any gun that goes BANG is a good gun to me.

Good luck on your purchase, and good shooting. Smile

KY,
I just had a conversation at the local gun shop not an hour ago. Look for a Wal Mart that is moving out their guns. The two near me were selling their 700s for $325 on sale until gone. One is sold out the other is still selling. I guess Wal Mart has decided to close up the 600 stores still selling and to go out of the gun business entirely, after the CA debacle. Cheaper than a barreled action.

Wal mart is going out of the gun buisness? In all states? Here in Alaska they have quite a selection of long arms and also sell handguns. I saw no evidence of such a move two weeks ago the last time I was at Wal mart.

IMO, the 300 win mag is a better caliber than the 300 WSM. The WSM is harder to load for

* Most of your reloading stuff doesn't work well: loading blocks, powder funnels, chamfer tools
* Some have chambering problems
* They take less shells in the mag depending upon the model
* You can't neck size cause they develop a crush fit after the first firing
* You can not load them for as much velocity, especially with the heavier bullets because the bullets start intruding upon case capacity
* Components and equipment are not as available as the win mag
* The develop pressure problems in a hurry and never, ever load above book max in a WSM

On the positive side - case head separation is not as much a problem without the belt and the excessive headspace on new cases.

I have reloaded for one of these and they have a 26" barrel and shoot pretty good. There is enough room in the mag to load against the lands and if you decide later to change it you have a nice Remington 700 action to rebarrel (like maybe to a 300RUM or a 6.5 rem mag).

Just load a 300 win mag up with 76 gr RL25 and the 200 gr Accubond for about 2950 fps and you will have a real winner. The 300 WSM will be more problematic.

Your results might vary.

Thanks all. I have been nudged by a local gunsmith who I trust to do all my work. He suggests a Tikka T3 in 300wsm. What do you think?
In my opinion you can't beat a Sako / Tikka T3
I haven't fired the 300 wsm in Tikka but it should drive tacks right out of the box.
My son just bought a Tikka T3 in 270WSM today and he already has the venerable 30:06 in a Tikka T3 which puts groups on paper from a bench at just over an inch. (reloads) But we're still workin on that Smile

Did it take you two years to work up the courage to say that or did you just run out of things to do? Very Happy I like the tikkas too but I like alot of other stuff better so there's so many guns so little time.

fnuser, Gremlin have just joined us on May 5 2009, a couple of weeks ago!
So his post may be a tad late in showing up. 11 days since he joined us Very Happy
But you must admit, due to the forum jacking and hijacking, there is a sh!tload of posts to read through..

Take your time reading Gremlin, we like comments even if they are a few years late.

And yeah, I agree Tikka make nice rifles..

My dad has a M700 chambered in 300RUM and the gunsmith after shooting it 18 times to get a zero he was happy with due to the recoil said he refuses to zero any more of them. Laughing
