wtf FWIW-out here in oregon they warn that raccoons are known carriers of rabies, along with skunks.Possums on the other hand are not immune to any disease according to some veterinarian that I talked with and if they get a disease it usually kills them quickly.Meaning that they are
most likely safe to eat.Personally I have never been hungry enough to eat any of them except for a"tree rat "when I was younger just for curiosity sake.I have also tried musk rat, rock chuck, porcupine and when I was stationed in GTMO a critter called a "banana rat"which is like a ground hog or a beaver with a prehensile tail that lives in a tree.Still no "coons"! Shocked

Just look at my photo. I sure don't look hungry enough to eat most of those critters. I make enough income to eat a little higher on the hog. But, hey,.........if I was starving..............!

As far as rabies, just don't eat the ones with white foam on their little black lips! Very Happy

I've eaten snake - its pretty good, tree rats - you gotta have a lot, birds from pidgeons and doves to turkeys and most every one in between, dog, fish - of all kinds, grass hoppers, ants, grubs and worms. You have to want to eat something real bad to eat the last four.

I cooked a coyote once, to feed my coon hounds. It smelled just like beef. Nope....I didn't try it.

I used to eat a dish they called "marascada" when I was in Puerto Rico all the time. It was chunks of red snapper, shrimp, conch, octopus, lobster, maybe scallops, onions and peppers, all cooked in either a butter and garlic sauce or a tomato based sauce. All I can tell you is that I'd go back to PR just to have some more.
