Bushy,

I've thought the same thing a few times; however, in the real world, I think they call that a miss! ROFL

Mike and Vince,

What kinda rabbits do you guys have in your areas?

Are they edible? or just used for target practice?

Around here they're actually coveted for the meat, even though they are plentiful (cottontails that is). They can be difficult to hunt, especially in areas where groundhogs are abundant, since the rabbits will usually use a GH hole as a hiding place (picture Bugs Bunny diving into a hole, only he didn't actually dig it).

The bunnies we have out here are European Rabbits.

They are very edible and tasty, although if they are not cooked properly the meat can be a bit dry. They lend themselves wonderfully to a casserole or a stew.

I have had them cooked over a fire on a spit, but I really do prefer them in a casserole or stew.

HeyOntheLasGallinas,

OK, so you say the rabbits cannot hear the bullet coming, and I have no reason or substantive material to dispute this, and have missed very few with my .22, but what about Doves.

I swear they either hear it coming, see it coming, or have ESP.

Environmental Scientist sounds like a great job, outdoors much?

What's up with that? Laughing

If the projectile is supersonic they aren't hearing it coming, nor are they reacting to the sound of the shot before the bullet gets there...

I once had a guy try to tell me that a bat could dodge a shot charge by using his sonar. When I pointed out that the shot was supersonic (Most is) and that the shot would reach the bat before the echo he seemed a bit flustered.

Mike,

I couldn’t have said it better. You understand the science well. If you have ever been in a war or just plain shot at, you will hear two sounds. The first will be the eerie sound of the bullet (hopefully missing); the second will be the sonic boom from the bullet going off. By the time the bullet sound hits you, its already gone.

Lester,

My job is really interesting. I sometimes get to walk around 5 to 10 square mile ranches. I’m outside about 20 percent of the time. The rest is spent writing reports.

Cary

Pumpkinslinger. You explain that to the Jackrabbit and maybe he won't change directions just as I pull the trigger... ROFL

For those who are not aware. The speed of sound at sea level is 720 to 740 mph (approximately). Which equates to 1085 to 1100 fps (approximately).

Blowed if I know mate - they're just rabbits to me, as there's only one kind here (apart from the black, white & brown ones locally: Someone's pet buck escaped & added some variety to the gene pool. Very Happy ).

IIRC eating bunnies in Oz "just ain't done" but I could be wrong.

I usually put bunny in a casserole with pheasant, pigeon &/or duck.

A lot go to friends with dogs - too many for me to get through

Bushy,

I had a dog that could do that. (hear the fall of the hammer and side-step the bullet). I had him for about 8 years. The neighbors thought he was a coyote; and shot at him all the time, without so much as a scratch. Sad to say, he couldn't out-manuver a pack of javilinas in tall weeds.

Joe,

Nice one there. How much did he field dress?

That's one evil, mean, wicked and nasty bunny wabbit mate, and those antlers are right at...nah, I don't even want to think of the height they are at.... Shocked Shocked Shocked

Cary...in the aussie Army, we call those sounds "crack thump". The crack is the projectile breaking the sound barrier as it passes overhead (hopefully passes) and the "thump" is the sound of the round being fired finally reaching you.

Mike...not a lot of people eat rabbits...but they do get chomped.

Cheers, Vince
