I think I'll hold off on that one. Horned Toads are currently on the endangered species list. The problems this species were caused (in my opinion) by fire ants. The only food that the horned toad eats is the red ant. When fire ants infected this country, they displaced or killed off the red ant. However, the fire ant population in this country started declining over the last couple of years so the red ant is comming back, along with the horned toad.

Cary, I'm curious. What is reducing the fire ant population? I seem to recall a media scare that they'd cover the whole southern part of the country.

I haven't seen a horned toad for at least 20 years now that you mention it, used to catch them quite a bit as a kid - did not know they were on the decline - too bad as they were kind of fun to have around.

PS,

Cold temperatures limit the northern expansion. It has been really dry here for the past few years; this could have something to do with it. I heard that scientists are experimenting with a small fly that is a natural parisite for fire ants in their country of origin (Brazil). Thew were going to do a pilot program with fly drops in a couple of Texas counties. It could be that the San Antonio area was picked for initial tests. What ever it is, we do have less fire ants.

WileyW,

We also loved to play with them as kids. We would always make sure that they weren't hurt and we always turned them loose afterwards.

I was always fascinated by the fact that they could squirt blood from the gland above their eyes. It might not be blood, but it looks like it. I've been squirted many times, by the larger males. It is a repellent for predators. My dogs always hated to get that on their noses. The dogs would rub their noses in the dirt when they were squirted. They could squirt it about 3 feet.

Another animal that I haven't seen in a long time is the desert tortoise. I’ve seen plenty of mud turtles though.
