Vint,

I hadn't heard a peep out of you in a long time. Maybe I just missed your posts or maybe nothing has riled you up lately Mad

To heck with the cactus, just bring the beer! If we have any left, we can pour it on a cactus plant............but, depending on who shows up, will judge if any is left over.

Cary,
Where you getting hay from now? We have had some rain up at the farm after about two months. The grass is growing like wildfire with this heat. But at near 100 degrees and a humidity rating of 90% or better it is real hot and soggy in the morning at least, until a bit of moisture burns off.

I-10 is only 25 miles south of the farm. You just go up to I-10 and take a right, take a little drive then turn north at Crestview on 85 and go to Lauel Hill. I grow pine trees but the hay farmers are all about the place. The hay pastures and fields here are full of hay ready to be cut.
Best,
Ed

Ed,

I've got a friend that raises irrigated coastal Bermuda grass hay for me and several other ranchers. There are about 2 or 3 in this area that does that. The problem is that they raise hay in the spring, then quit for the rest of the year, because it's too hard to raise hay when the summer heat gets up there. If you have to irrigate every drop of water that a hay crop gets, the hay farmer doesn't make much of anything, even at $80 a bale (6x6 round bale). Currently I have enough hay to last me until the end of September. This is 100% feeding, just like winter time. This is the hay that I normally purchase for the winter (next winter). Now, what I'm (along with the rest of the ranchers in this area) going to have to do is figure out where to get hay for the upcoming winter. I have a friend that is working in the oil business up in north Texas. He said that the same hay that I'm paying $80 dollars a bale for is going for 35 dollars up there, but I’m not sure how much it would cost to truck hay about 500 or 600 miles. We may end up going east for hay.

I've already decided that I'm not going to do a whole herd sell-out because of the drought. It's too hard to buy back quality cattle. You always end up buying someone elses culls for more money than you sell your good stuff for. If we get fall rains, I'll plant lots of oats and rye.

Cary

I'm with you there, as you can see this election they aren't worried about rural America. They would rather get people out to vote that don't pay attention to the issues they want to vote foe a popularity contest.

3" of rain in the last 6 hours & the seal round one of my roof vents has failed.
It's blowing a gale & dark, so there's no way I'm climbing up to try & fix it - I'll mop out in the morning as it's only the kitchen that's affected.

Global warming my arse..... Sad

It is a bit further than 5 or 600 miles to NW Florida, about 820 from gate to gate, one way. But if you get in a pinch and need help just drop a note. I do have a truck and a 20ft open equipment trailer with dual 10K axles. I could haul a few bales. Very Happy
Best,
Ed

Ed,

Thanks for the offer. I just hope that it doesn't get bad enough for me to take you up on that offer. It would be so much easier to just rain. I just heard on the news that West Texas is getting lots of rain. This is the desert! Makes you wonder what's going on.

Again, thanks for the offer.

Cary

Ok- change in plans.

We converge on Cary's with two bails of alfalfa/hay each per truck.

Oh.....and beers. And maybe something nice to BBQ too. Very Happy

We don't need to bring anything for the BBQ. Just beer. He has all that beef on the hoof that will do quite nicely. Or maybe he will finally get lucky with those pigs...

Pork, beef and beans with chips and beer...Yeah! That'll work...
