I have a really nice Marlin 336RC in .35 made in 1957. It's at least 95%. I mentioned to my Brother-in-Law that I'd like to get the same S+W .357 that he has and he offered to trade for my Marlin. His S+W is a .357 Model 19 and likewise in 90-95% condition. I have other Marlin's, a 1895SDG in 45/70 and a 336C in .30/30. Well I guess my question is what would you do?
Thanks,
Don

I don't know offhand what the respective values of the Marlin and S&W are but it looks like you have the rifle end covered with the other two...

Guess I would just think up a good reason to keep the .35 and pick up a Model 19 elsewhere. Good M19s can be found with a little luck, but it seems like good Marlins in .35 Remington are a bit scarce...at least around here. Besides, there's always room for one more gun.

Thanks for talking me down! The Marlin .35 is staying and I'll just start looking around the gun shops for a good .357. I'm not really locked in on buying a S+W 19, but I like that size frame. Not too big, but hopefully able to handle magnum loads. I think a good used Ruger GP100 or Security Six would probably suit me just fine also.

BigBlue, I've had a Security Six for about 30 years and am very pleased with it. Odds are that my next handgun will be a GP-100 too.

I've had the SS so long that the Hogue emblem fell out! I think the rib was made by Pachmyer.

The M19 is a good gun and the two I have owned were very accurate, but they really weren't the best choice for sustained shooting. That light frame is nice to carry but there is a price to pay. Heavy use led to refitting and re-timing for both...of course they were subjected to a lot of shooting; mostly with full-house loads. I'm in agreement with Pumpkinslinger when it comes to either that Security Six or the GP100 for heavier use.

Bingo! and, you can get a new Ruger for the price of a used Smith.

Did you also take a look at Taurus M66's? I shoot heavy, full bore loads in mine and it's medium/heavy frame is holding up just fine and it's even cheaper than Ruger.

Actually I did take a look at the Taurus .357s, but I was leaning more towards the basic six shot fixed sight model 65 in S.S. The price is very attractive, but I do fear their bad reputation when it comes to service. Most Taurus guns never need service, but the ones that do have problems often leave their owners pulling their hair out.

I actually have 2 Taurus handguns, my .357 and I've got a 1911AL. Love 'em both. I've been thinking about getting a mod. 605 SS 3" .357 for conceal carry while off duty. The only problem with that is I can't carry it as a back up on duty. My back up has to be an auto.

BTW the 65 is a little lighter frame than the 66.
