Any of you guys use ATV's for hunting, ice fishing, plowing snow? I never hear much about them on here. I'm thinking about upgrading from my Mule to a Kawasaki Teryx side by side. I like the Mule and it does just about everything I need it to do, But Very Happy at times I would like a bit more getty up and go. Like when I'm out 5 miles on the Bay ice fishing and want to get back to shore in a hurry, or hunting when I travel 8-10 miles one way to my spot, makes a long ride at 25 mph..Anyone have any experance with the Teryx?
My Mule:

The 2009 and 2010 Teryx.

I run an Arctic Cat 400 LE for hunting plowing and especially ice fishing with chains on the rear it's pretty hard to stop. As far as speed, it's hard to handle the wind in the cold, generally don't get over 30mph.

Probably could use one around the farm.

But NEVER EVER use them during hunting season. My neighbors do, and you should hear the woods come alive with running deer when they crank them up at daylight in the morning. Mad

Don't want my deer in the next county when I get to stand.

But that's just me. You guys don't start crying foul. Laughing

Once they get used to them being around it's actually better then walking. I have seen many stand there and just look as you ride by.

They do that when I drive the tractor around which they see every week of the year. But although my neighbors use theirs all hunting season, the deer never get used to them. They have all figured out that

ATV=Hunter ...BAD

John Deere=guy who plants food for us ...GOOD

Very Happy

One other question Wiersy. Have you ever seen a 4 1/2 or 5 1/2 year old buck stand there and watch it go by? Because I have seen quite a few Pope and Young and a B&C, run like hell as soon as they hear the ATV crank up over a half a mile away. Have to admit, I have never seen a BIG buck stand and watch the tractor either tho.

The way my seasons go I haven't even seen a squirrel that old!!!!

I did shoot one big buck probably about 10 years ago that you could have tried to run him over with a train and he wouldn't have paid attention. He had a nice hot doe in front of him.

Most of the time the older deer go into hiding around here as soon as they start hearing every body pull their orange clothes out of the closet.

Had that happen to me on opening day last week. Neighbor decides to ride his toy out to the deer woods 15 minutes after legal shooting starts. He parks it about 80 yards from my stand and "hunts" from the machine for about 75 minutes and rides it back to the house. Needless to say, I won't be there next year on opening day.

There were strict laws about the use of ATV's in Minnesota. You could only use them until 1/2 hour before sunrise, form 11 am to 2 pm and 1/2 hour after sunset on private land and public land if they were allowed at all. now you can use them any time on private land. Most of the time it goes back to courtesy or lack there of!!!!

I don't use mine to ride to my stand, I just like to get within a mile or so. Can't walk as far as I used to.
We have similar laws in Mich. during hunting season.

Don't get me wrong...

I don't have a problem with folks using these type vehicles. As a matter of fact, I wanna get one myself. I take exception to them being used in the manner described above.

Edited...

If someone has a disability, and NEEDS to use one to hunt, by all means, go for it. But I had talked to this guy 2 days earlier, while he was drinkin' beer and sightin' in, and shoulda seen the writing on the wall....

They can be a great asset on a hunt but they can be a nuisance in the hands of the inconsiderate.

Because of my disabilities I wouldn't be able to do a lot of my hunting and sure wouldn't be able to ice fish any more.

They sure are not meant to be a portable deer stand.
