Took the RRA 20" 1-8 Predator Pursuit to the range this mornin Very Happy . I shot various rounds. The worst group was 1.3" Best was 0.45 @ 100yds.
I shot 55 grain TSX's-- 62 grain TSX's --65 grain Sierra Game kings and 55 grain factory umc rounds. The 62 grain TSX shot much better out of this rifle than my 16" 1-9 Colt . Right around a inch. I need to get another box of these and do some more testing. The best load was 25.5 grains of Varget and the 65 grain Sierra Game Kings ( 0.45"). Even the factory 55 grain UMC shot well. When I get the right load for this rifle it's gonna be a shooter Very Happy .

Joe

That's good Joe! I'm seeing more and more articles about the ARs being used for hunting. It seems that they are overcoming the media slander about "assault weapons".

I think Varget and the .223 were made for each other. One of my favorite loads is 69gr. Sie. MatchKing over 26.0gr. of Varget using SRBR primers for 1-9" or faster twist rate. I know the 69gr. MatchKing bullets work great on crows and groundhogs, but I'm not sure they would be the best choice for coyotes. I was shooting my 1-9" twist H&R Superlight today and was surprised at how well it shot 40gr. Hornady V-max bullets over Benchmark powder. I have been using mostly heavier bullets, but I had loaded these to try for another rifle years ago and they have been sitting ever since. Got 1/2" groups at 100 yards with them today. I've also had good luck with loads in .223s using BL-C(2) powder.

My Barnes 62 TSX does 1" groups with Varget. Varget does good with the .308 also.

BigBlue, 26gr of Varget with a 69gr bullet sounds on the hot side.

I got some TAC the other day and loaded some up but haven't been to the range to check the loads out yet. I'm trying the Berger 70gr VLDs. Thought these might get out to 500 yards while fending of the wind fairly well for a .224 bullet.

I love Varget Very Happy I use in the .308 and the .223 and I don't see me stopping anytime soon Very Happy . My buddy is trying a lot of different powders for his AR but I'm stickin with Varget. I think I'm gonna keep shooting the 65 grain Sierra Game King also it's a well constructed bullet I think it will do fine for deer and for longer range shooting at the range.

I think we've discussed this before but... The pressure curve of the powder you use in ARs in important and some work better than others, with respect to operating the action. Too low a pressure at the gas port means the action might not eject and feed right. Too high and it can slam the action harder than needed, accelerating wear.

You are correct Very Happy . Sierra actually has different load data for the AR. But they didn't have ( AR ) data for Varget with the 65 grn GK so I used ( Bolt Data ) and started low.

Hodgdon lists it as a maximum load.

Haven't had a chance to shoot it yet Crying or Very sad . It will probably be a week or two before I can get to the range.

Went and shot it today the trigger is great Very Happy . It wasn't a great day to shoot( very windy) but I still managed to shoot a few good groups. With the 65 grain sierra and Benchmark .857 / with Varget .735 . The 62 grain TSX did not like benchmark at all wtf but shot .922 with varget ( 5 shot groups ). I will keep trying combos Very Happy .
