This is the best description or demonstration I have seen as to why Christchurch had so much damage from their earthquake. I think it would be great for all kids to see this...give them a better understanding of why so much damage happened.
Very interesting and informative.

Is that the normal condition of the ground or has it been an affect of above normal rain fall?

I liked the other video better. Seems we need our resident NZ cop to get to work...

Hey guys and gals, I ve been out of the loop whilst I moved from Whakatane to Cambridge.
I got called for DVI (body repatriation) the day after I unplugged the computer for the packers to pack and am currently taking a week off. I told my boss that I could but wasn't in the right space with the move etc. I go back to work in Hamilton on 16th March at this stage and will volunteer to go down then. I'm sure it won't be cleaned up at that point. As of today the total is 164 dead.
I got a mate in Urban SAR in CHCH and he sent me some pretty graphic pictures he took down town.
It's gonna be a long road to walk and I will do my bit for the team.

Good to see you Radar! Sorry bout the lovely duty you got, all in a days work I guess when the days are hell-bent. I've never been around any disaster like that but I appreciate your resolve to do the job I would cringe at. You must be good with people, and that's my downfall. Hope the duty goes by fast for you, it'll be good to let it go. Good luck!
Suz

Most of the West coast of the USA is built on ground that will suffer from liquifaction. All of the Seattle city center is built on fill. I live on one of the many hills that are sandstone or shale so not much danger of sinking here but go just a few miles north or west and it is not going to be good.
We (my wife and I) are thinking seriously of moving east and south to get away from the politics and hazards of this area.
