I am considering picking up a S&W 4013TSW pistol. I have been unable to get onto the S&W website today, so I thought I would ask if anyone out there is familiar with this .40 semiauto. (Size, capacity, reliability, etc.)

Well, I did find this: (any comments?)

Smith & Wessons 4013TSW is a well desgned, attractive handgun. It incorporates many desireable features. What I like best is the loaded chamber port on the barrel which allows you to see if the chamber is loaded without retracting the slide.
Being a tactical weapon, the 4013TSW has an ambidextrious decocker, Novak combat sights, a bobbed hammer and of course an equipment rail for flashlight or laser sight.
The slide is matte stainless steel while the frame a lightweight alloy. The controls feature a matte black finish which certainly compliments it's looks.
A wide frame allows for 9 rnds of .40 S&W in a very compact package.
The recoil assembly features dual springs and a spring loaded plunger, sure to guarantee a long life for the aluminum frame.
Out in the field this pistol placed tight groups in police silouette targets in spite of the short 3.5" Bbl. It reliably fed HP and FMJ ammo. Contrary to the advertised specs. The 4013TSW is actually TDA not DAO.

seems a bit heavy for a carry pistol. I prefer my trigger pull to be the same for each shot. Have you looked at a Kahr?

Thanks, Slim,
I like a little extra weight (in pistols, not women). I definitely do not like polymer pistols. The Kahr K40 looks like a nice little carry piece, but has the disadvantage of only 6 rounds. I haven't had the chance to shoot one. From what I have seen, I don't like the K40 sights very much, but I could get used to them. The ones I have seen were also a little pricey.

The reason I am asking about the 4013TSW is that I have found one in excellent shape at a very reasonable $380.

If money were no object, I'd be buying a full-size 1911.

I am stuck in the same boat as 44M, for some weird reason an auto has to have a hammer. And a de-cocker is nice. Have you tried any C.Z.'s or Witness products maybe a Baby Eagle? In short a C.Z.75 knockoff. Most of them make a compact version and in the C.Z. a sub-compact. I like mine a lot, it is a 9 but I think the accuracy is in the pistol not the cartridge. I have a 1911, a couple Sigs, and some old pistols of various lineage but when a casual competition comes up among friends I take my C.Z..

Yup...... Kahr's are a little pricey but well worth it !!!

When talking .40 cal carry, extra weight is a good thing. Shoot a PM40 and you'll understand........that's why I opted for the MK40 !!!

The Kahr poly .45 is actually friendlier to shoot than the MK40 Confused

just my personal opinion, but I dont use a 9 for a carry. The reason I say this is because of police and ex military, and current military I personally know who have dumped clips of 9s into charging madmen and they kept coming, but then once they got 45s stopped madmen in their tracks with a single double tap, I think the 45 is the better choice. I always say, why toss pebbles when you can throw boulders. But they will know if a 45 hits them, and I would think most circumstances wouldn't require more than 6 to 8 rounds, if that to rectify. Most you hear or read about seldom shoot more than once or twice to end a dangerous situation. I carry 45acps almost exclusively, yes, even my full sized steel Witness, which after some work is a great shooting gun. But I bought it new back in the early 90's , so maybe Tanfoglio is cleaned up its tolerances now.
anyway, I kind of like the new Para Warthog , 10+1, small and mean looking.

I like the looks of that Marty, nice and small but heavy. One price I saw was $661 and the reviews I read were very positive. One guy said it was tight chambered and about a 9lb pull. Here's a comparison of the Smith & Wesson 4013TSW, the Sig SauerP229 and Ruger’s P94DC

Happy Shopping!

tight chamber and trigger pull can usually be fixed with little problems though. And unfortunately, unless your lucky, I dont think there are many guns under a grand that you might get that are great out of the box. Not like in the old days when companies went that extra mile. Colt use to not only work every gun by hand, but send you a target with 6 rounds shot from your gun and the signature of the gunsmith who worked it. Today, thats a high priced option. But 1911 style guns are really easy to clean up and improve with few tools and a couple of good rated springs by wolf. Or, you can do the springs the old way and grind off parts to lower the tension, but most of the repair manuals I have read suggest not doing that.

Oh, and I love and totally respect gun test. they pull no punches like the magazines do. They dont worry about ticking off advertisers. My dad gave me his collection of he had of gun test. I dont know what years but each binder has a years worth and there are 8 binders full. I still haven't gone through them.

Thanks, Suz, an excellent article. If any of my listings on GunBroker sell, I'll be picking up that S&W.
