On Sunday after a long hot day in the garden and having friends round for a bar b q me and my brother decided to head out for a roe buck each at a piece of groud i have 30mins from home. Off we went armed with the trusty .243ackerley. At this time of year the mature bucks have gone to ground defending their territories from young marauding bucks and gathering their strength for the rut in a months time. As to be expected we were seeind deer within minutes of arrival although most were young bucks out for a jolly in the middle of the fields knowing the big boys are lying low. To cut a long story short, we decided to wait in the corner of a field on the edge of a wood that we knew contained several deer. Sure enough by 10pm we had 2 youngish bucks 200yds in front of us, but we were hoping for something bigger. A few minutes later we heard crashing in the wood to our left and out ran a young buck being pursued by what can only be described as a monster buck!
Within milaseconds i spun the rifle round and dropped him on the spot at about 80yds then passed the rifle to my brother who drew a bead on the rapidly departing younger buck, when he was 270yds out he made the fatal error of stopping. I watched through the Zeiss Binos as the 95gr bullet hit home plum centre in the shoulder. The buck lept up hind legs kicking before runnin flat out to the wood he was trying to make it to which by now was only 30yds away....he made it and dissapeared into the wood.
We hastily walked up to where mine fell and deposited him in the bak of the truck and went to look for toms. After what seemed an impossibly long walk we came to where we were sure we'd seen him enter the wood. As soon as i stepped into the wood i nearly tripped over what we were looking for Toms first Roe buck and breathed a great sigh of relief!! Tom was quite rightly elated and was pleased that all the practice on the range had paid off! The 95gr bullet passed straight thru with ease causing massive damage to the heart and lungs.
Tommorow i have 4 clients who are all deserate for trophy roe bucks, and i am going to put them all in seats then retiire to a safe distance and wait for the shots! A write up will follow on this hunt and the outcome.
I have pics on my digital camera of this hunt that i will post as soon as i can so you can see for yourselves!
