I was in my Dads gun shop the other day and he digs out this AK-47 he picked up before the first ban on these Bad guns. It has a folding stock that has been welded, because it was illegal at the time to fold. It has never been fired and needs the cosmoline cleaned off before used. I might buy it from him. What works good for cleaning this stuff off? I heard gas, and then some good cleaning solution. Anyone have one?

I believe "baking" the rifle at a low temperature seems to be a common method to remove cosmoline.

Still now that the 1994 Assult weapon ban is expired unless I am mistaken can you not install a folding stock again? Confused

One thing I found funny is that the Russian Arsenal Izhevsk seems to think patenting the AK in 1999 somehow gives them exclusive rights to the platform, only way I can see that working is if Russia gave them the patent as every other country in the world doesn't patent things in common usage long after they were first produced. Laughing

As a dedicated milsurper ,let me assure you that steam is the best way to remove cosmoline.Wipe it off with a paper towel .

Dimitri, Yes for now you can, I've found a lot of stock options. But I might just go with the same folding stock. Steam or heat makes sense for removing the cosmoline..Thanks..

maybe I did not clean mine right?
I just wiped every thing off as much as I could with a rag till I could not see it anymore.
ran a cleaning rod threw the barrel till it was squeaky clean.
while I had it disassembled I cleaned and made sure all the metal filings was out of it.

after that I ran a few hundred shells threw it. great gun and I was impressed on how accurate it was.

I would recommend you buying it. for a collectors item in for not anything else. there is a little history on them guns.
