Man, more maulings in Montana. Sames the risk when ya camp or hike in someone elses yard. Still tragic though and and aweful way to go....not good at all and my heat goes out to the vic's. Sad

Sis lives bout 30 mins from Glaicer. Seen a lot of tracks there bouts. Thankfully, no up close and personal contacts. I've carried in there even when it wasnt legal. Screw it- write me a ticket if I live. If not, don't care.

Headin' out tomorrow for a vist for a spell, wish I could take my Alaskan and some Punch loads but...I aint riskin' losing it to the "brotherhood security" forces we have at LAX so...slugs in the brother-n-law's 12ga will have to suffice fer walk-a-bouts.

Keep yer peepers popped in bear contry gang. I know I will...

Stay alert, Stovey.

Reminds me of this story:

My wife and I joined her sister and my brother in law for a fly-in fishing trip in Canada (flew north out of Gogama, and were dropped off by a float plane for a week's stay.) It was her "time of the month", and friends had warned her not to go. They said a bear would find her from 20 miles away, and come tear her up.

Nervous, she asked the pilot if there had been any problems with bear attacks.
His reply:

Do you know how to tell a grizzly from a black bear?

If a bear chases you, and you climb a tree to get away,

If the bear then climbs the tree and eats you, it is a black bear.

If the bear knocks the tree down and eats you, it is a grizzly.

True story. You just can't make this stuff up.
She was a trooper, though, and didn't ask to return with the pilot. We had a great time fishing. (Unfortunately, 25 years later, she turned into the AntiChrist - but that's another story.)

a mad grizz can sure as hell climb a tree if the tree is big enough around to hold the bears weight. An enraged grizz will even use his teeth to get a purchase on a tree to climb it. Do not believe the stories you hear about a grizzly bear not being able to climb trees, Their 6 inch claws aid in tree climbing ability, they can climb them just fine when they want to, but like a previous poster said they generally just dig em up and knock em down.

We we camped up in Alaska, they spend plenty of time educating tourist about bears. On one hike we ate lunch on a ledge above a Grizzly that was asleep on the next ledge down. On another hike we had 7 bears within 50' of us, 5 black and two grizzly. I don't remember as much emphasis when camping in Glacier or elsewhere in the lower 50.

I think it might have something to do with the population. More people in griz country in MT than Alaska, in my guestimation.
