Howdy. We have a Area here called the Fair Hill National Recources Management Area they deal with a lot of race horses the place has thousands of acres. They open certain sections to bow hunters every year for $50 bucks you can hunt archery in the open sections. They also have a managed shotgun hunt for deer they do it on a lottery pick 170 a year. Well as luck would have it i got picked this year Very Happy . Your aloud four does and they don't go against your regular hunting license limit and on the morning of the hunt they do another lottery pick 1 out of 10 will be able to shoot a buck inplace of one of the does and do to the limited hunting in these areas there are some nice bucks there. It's a pretty sweet deal they drag your deer , gut them, pull a gaw bone, and load them in your truck for ya. I have to go Dec 11th to a manditory Qualifying with my shotgun and after qualifying they will let me no witch date i will hunt Jan 2nd or 3rd. I will hit the range this week to check the rem 1100 out and should be good to go. Do you guys have any hunts like this.
Joe

Sounds like fun! What does "pull a gaw bone" mean though?

Except for a few minor exceptions, all big game hunting tags are now draw only for my state, even general deer season. There are places that have their own private property and you can buy / draw a limited "Tresspass" permit. Nothing offically like what you are describing though.

OOPS (lol) spelled it wrong ( had a brain fart) Embarassed Embarassed Jaw bone the game management pulls the lower jaw bone to age the deer.

They cant do it from the front two teeth? I know the molars are easier to age from but here in Utah a few of the hunts we have require us to sent in harvest info including the front two teeth so they can age the animals. I just sent mine off the other day in fact.

(Off topic but the wild buffalo hunt we have here requires a successful hunter to submit a blood sample along with the teeth... LOL they send you a blood vial and everything to collect it).

Anyway back on topic I first read "gaw" as in "gnaw" like they wanted a bone for their dogs to chew on or something... LMAO Smile

You would think they could age them just from the teeth. My buddy got picked for the hunt last year and said they pulled the lower jaw on every deer taken. I guess that way they can take it with them and do it later i'm not sure what there reasoning is.

Here on the state run management areas , they pull the jawbone as well .. Jus hope it aint a wall hanger !!
We have one area near the outskirts of Birmingham ( is a state run campground ) that is over run with deer ..
They do a two day hunt every year .. You send your name in , they select 70 names , you go to a string n stick proficiency test , pass it , give em fifty bux .. No limits , shoot all u see ..

Bushmaster.....I see some of your point. I get a kick out it's a limited Management hunt. You apply, hope to get drawn so you can, in this case shoot four Doe's. Wouldn't it be better to let 4x the hunters in, spread out over 4x the number of day's in the field and this way everyone gets a chance at a Extra Doe.
shrpshtrjoe....I am in Know way, taking anything away from your hunt. I think it's great you got drawn, Now go wack-um-and-stack-um !

Howdy I totaly agree LittleMagnum. I have always felt if people that owned land would let just a few hunters on most of us would have a place to hunt. Or in the case of a managed hunt cut the bag limit and double the hunters and give more people a chance. They would also double there money.

I have a friend in Delaware that just returned from a managed hunt in S. Carolina. It's 4 days in length, and only for disabled hunters. I really like the idea. My friend is 58, a lifelong hunter who's legs recently gave out due to spinal stenosis. You can't imagine how thrilled he is to be able to hunt again even with his limited mobility. He couldn't care less about bagging anything (he did get a doe though). It's simply being able to take part in the hunt again. It's not always old guys either. For various reasons you'll get younger hunters who require this type of hunt. It's nice to know someone still gives a damn about them. Best wishes.

Howdy. Well i just got done "Qualifing" for the hunt, you needed to shoot 3 out of 5 shots in a 9 inch bull at 40 yards ( and some didn't make it). They gave me my date of Jan 3rd so all i need now is for a few confused deer to walk around in front of me on the 3rd Confused and i should be be good to go Shooting ( watch us get a blizzard)
