Suz...What I'm trying to explain is that you can build up all the pressure you want, but until the bullet starts to move neither one does anything but sit there.

I guess I have to come down on the side of the case moving first...maybe. Since pressure works equally in all directions and will follow the path of least resistance, with the case being the lightest component in the typical game or handgun cartridge, I envision the case moving back against the breech-face first. At that point it is static and the pressure continues to work on the bullet base causing movement. Where this theory is conflicted is in small-bore cartridges where the bullet actually weighs less than the case. In instances such as this the process would be reversed.

Just a thought and may well be way off base...wouldn't be the first time...or probably the last!
