I was in a local gun shop yesterday just to browse and overhead an interesting conversation between the owner and a couple of patrons. They were discussing the recent factory changes at Remington and Marlin. Apparently, they moved some factories and hired new works to cut cost. The owner said he stopped ordering Remingtons and Marlins because he has been having quality problems with scope mounting holes not proper, trigger issues, etc. The experienced workers aren't building the guns anymore. He told the patrons, if you want a Remington or Marlin for Christmas, buy a used one. Anyone else heard of this?

Yes, I heard, yesterday, that when Remington's parent company moved the manufactuing operations from Ct, they didn't take any machines nor employees, a whole new start.

Yes I have heard the same thing, mostly with the shotguns. Since the Cerberus group bought them out a few years ago, it is said that the quality has gone down tremendously. Lets put it this way, the local gunshop will not service remington shotguns made after 2007!!

Sadly the people retiring are replaced with a newer generation who probably doesn't care as much for quality like the older generation did. Now its all about the bottom line. My 2nd oldest son bought an 870 12g 3" 2 years ago and it has been back to the factory 3 times already for repairs.

Once for broken extractor and 2 times for broken firing pin, and he does not reload and shoots factory ammo.

Sad, but true that things seem to be going downhill. Fortunately there are a lot of used Marlins and Remingtons on the used gun racks. If you want one, get one while you can. Take care...

Leave it to MBAs to screw up yet another good company, or two in this case.

Are Remington and Marlin the only gun companies that are owned by Cerberus?

The Cerberus group also owns Bushmaster Firearms.

Edit: They own a lot more. Freedom Group

Hmm...interesting! I know where my Benelli, Mossberg, Ruger, Taurus and Howa are made! Fer some reason I was never a huge Remington fan. No particular reason either. Old Deluxe stuff was nice but $$. Love the Marlin lever-gun's and features, wanna .357 too.

My Remington Model Seven is my favorite hunting rifle, but Cerberus had no hand in it.

Shootin' trap the other day- lotta old guys got some pretty wicked cool old Rem gas guns. My buddy came in with an old 20g pump Wingmaster deluxe, no rib, fixed choke, man was that thing SWEET. Shop down the street had a 20g Field Special. I had no idea what it was, looked odd with a striaght wrist- went home, researched it, came back and it was GONE. Mad Damnit! Prolly never see one of these again. Bet if I do I'm nailing it. Remy made some awesome shotty's! Another budy has a .410 Remy gasser!

I'm kinda the odd stump out, they were never in my price range. Some of them old hand-me-downs are just too gorgeous. Guess I'm more of a fan of them than I thought. Wish my old man was too!

I got my Model Seven used. It was a lot more affordable that way. Laughing

Well the Freedom group just scooped up another gun manufacture. I just hope this group doesn't go belly up with so many gun manufactures under their belt.

Well, Ruger is still independent. What other gun makers are still not covered by the umbrella of Freedom Group?

we can buy take offs of the 870 new for $399, gun city branded, not as sweet of finish as the origonal but a good solid funtional gun all the same. the 18" barreled .12ga pump is one mean wee beastie.
