I get chest pains when reading some of the gun rags and the prices for new guns. Who can afford $2,000 to $3,000.00 for a high grade rifle or shotgun? What with mortgage payments, car payments and kids in school that has an effect on disposable income. It sometimes appears the gun magazines have forgotten their audience or lost touch with reality.

This week, I bought an excellent used T/C .50 Hawken flintlock for $100. That got me to thinking about some other $100 guns that have come my way. A few years back, I bought an excellent older 12 gauge Remington 870 for $100.00. A month later I picked up a 16 gauge 870 for the same price. Finally, I got a Belgian Mauser .30-06 in a sporter stock for $100. Still have all these guns and they continue to serve me well. Just the idle thoughts of an idle fellow. All the best...

Howdy. I hear ya some of the gun prices out there are just plain nuts. I too have found some great guns for around the $100 mark. I try to keep some extra cash on hand for just that reason. When i don't have it on hand is mostly when i find the real good deals( lol) but thats how it works sometimes.

Story of my life, flat broke, good deals come begging! Guess that 's the way it goes, still nice to "dream" of 'em though!

Bought a 6.5x55 Model 38 Mauser about ten years ago for 100. Installed a williams peep and short ramp frontsite, removed the hand guard and installed a new trigger. Got 250.oo invested .

Shoots with all the rifles that cost ten times more.
Never again have I been able to pick one up cheap again that were not worn or shot out.

Some of the older firarms are worth more today when they were new . Be it that they were hand fitted or what ever . Pick up a old wincester and there is something about the feel of working the action and the balance that the new rifles do not share . This I find also drives up the price then.

Bought a used 336/35 Marlin made in '54. The outside finish was well worn off . It appeared that the gun had been carried many years but not shot much. Since it had the ballard rifling , I grabbed it for the selling price of a new one. Think this old rifle shoots better than my buddies newer Marlin.
I am pleased having found it.

I have bought a few new rifles over the years and had some grief with them. A 17V marlin that had an eight pound trigger , and never grouped all that well. Then there was the 45/70 Guide that had barrel problems.
It seems the newer units all require some work, be it to the trigger bedding or something.
Good used rifles do not come in the 100 dollar range any more in these parts . More in the Five to eight hundred dollar range .
Bought a BLR in 358 almost new that required some repairs. It was sent to Browning and now it is a good shooter . I saved a few hundred by taking a chance. Just had a gut feeling on that one.
Then I also bought a used 1894 Marlin in 44 Mag It is about 15 years old and again it is a good shooter . Friend bouht a new unit in 357 and I would not want it . It worked as well as having hot dogs for thanksgiving dinner.

Oh someday I will find a 200.oo Winchester 94 in 30/30 that is good. Im looking.
