It is late in the season and the furs are losing the luster a bit but there is still some good hunting time left. All of the young stupid ones have long since been taken to the fur buyer and the remaining coyotes are call shy and wary.... but it is the mating season!

What are you guys secrets to success in the late winter? What are you doing differently now than you were a month ago?

More howling now and much less critter in distress calling. The Yotes are mating and denning up and are much more concerned with territory rights than ever before. Make one think that there's a newcomer trying to take over and you've got the making for a good chance at popping one.

Yesterday my calling buddy and I went on a search and destroy hunt and ended up calling in eight coyotes to under 50 yards. Dead Coyote and a Benelli 12ga took care of five of them and two were taken with an AR. One eluded our best efforts.

Male Challenge and Distressed Coyote Pup were our two main calls using handcalls (I like the cow elk calls as they can be adapted to the pup calls with some practice), although, we had some success with conventional calls as well.

Our challenge is too much wind this time of year. We have been winded out our last two trips after marginal success.
