Rem. 722 question

I have an old Remington 722, chambered in a .222 Rem. I bought it second hand, and I noticed that the rear portion of the receiver is not level with the front portion of the scope mounting screw holes. Is this the way they're built? Or is this paticular gun a defect?

If I'm understanding you right, you are saying the rear base is thicker than the front to be level? That should be how its made.

No the rear base is thinner.

Did you switch the front for the rear? Maybe they are on reversed? Its hard to visualize what is being typed, a pic would do wonders.

If I'm remembering correctly, one piece bases for the 722 actually came with a shim that was meant to fit between the receiver and the base to level the base. Otherwise, two-piece bases were taller for the rear than the front.
