Hi,
The 721 Remington is an early version of the Remington 700. Most of the dimensions are the same but the extractors for the 721 270 win / 30/06 are different. Other than that, the gun should be a real shooter. That model was made back when Remington was still making great rifles. I don't care much for the new Remingtons. Not the same quality in my opinion

I agree with big dog, don't care for the newer Remingtons. My last 3 have required glass bedding of the action, barrel floating and trigger work
($250.) to make them shoot as well as my Remingtons from the 80s. I've sworn off them, and will go for Sakos and Tikkas in the future, maybe even Savage. The Remington 721 is the forerunner of the model 700 and from all reports quite the good rifle. Best wishes.

Remington 721 was made starting in 1948 and was in production until 1962 or thereabouts when the model 700 came out (according to the local gunsmith) anyways a 721 will be of that vintage somewhere. My 30.06 used to be able to hold 1 inch groups at 100 yrds no problem until a couple of yrs ago on a pack in trip. got caught in some nasty weather with no clean ing equipment on me. now the muzzle end of the bore is a lil rough. however when it fills up with copper it will still group in the 1.24" inch range with sierra Pro Hunters. I am still using it as my primary big game rifle. I'll warn you though if you're gonna do a lot of hiking/hunting the 721 is pretty heavy. It should serve you well. i know mine has.

It depends. The rifle may have been modified to accommodate the .308 Norma Magnum caliber. If you like the caliber and want to shoot it, then go for it. There may be a problem if you want to rebarrel it back to a .30-06 class cartridge. The bolt face and the feed rails may have been opened up to accommodate the magnum round. All the best...
