Some years ago, I came across a used sporterized Krag carbine for $35 and became attached to these classic arms. The local gun shop gets a Krag every now and again and sells them for very little money. When used within their limitations with sensible reloads, these rifles have actions as smooth as glass and a joy to shoot. Anyone else like these rifles? All the best...

Those 30/40 Krags are great, I have a 1896 rifle in "as issued" condition that I have shot several times. It sure is smooth with little recoil. I don't shoot it any more after seeing what a stock Krag is going for but sure would like to find a beater to play with.

I found a lovely 1898 sporterized Krag this morning and brought it home. The shop has three on the rack, but this was in excellent condition with a classic walnut stock. The final cost was $115 and I am thrilled. The bore is very nice and it has the original rear sight that is adjustable for windage and elevation. All the best...

Krag's must not have been to popular in East Texas, I have not seen any in the pawn or gun shops around here. Enjoy your new toy.

My father made me start out using a cooperative (my uncle owned it and all of us had to use it) .30-40 Krag with no scope when I was 14...only the rear "John Wayne" sight. My first tag was for an antelope in Wyoming, it was mid way through the season and the antelope wouldn't let you get anywhere near them, how I downed that first critter is beyond me, my motivation was to move on to something with a scope. Looking back, my cousins and I curse the rifle since we all had to start out with it, my uncle got rid of the rifle several years back, he offered it to me, but I was in the service and had no where to keep it so I passed. I kick myself every day, that rifle was true and well built, besdies, it would have been fun to pass the tradition on to my son and make him earn his right of passage.

I sporterized a shot out 1898 30/40 Krag for my father on his 70th birthday 13 years ago. The cost of doing it was expensive but the look on his face was priceless! It got too heavy for my father so he gave it back to me. My son used it to kill his first buck. I used it to kill a few deer also. My neighbors son is now useing it in TN. It has the smoothest/loose action that I have ever seen! As a side note my father still hunts but with a lighter Savage 110 in 270 with synthetic stock that I made over for him.

Mine is a Ruger #3 and is a wonderful rifle for brush and heavy timber. I use it with iron sights and it weighs a mere 6lbs 2ozs.
