Suz, do me a favour and give me the TTL Lyman is giving now for the 30/30 and for the .308 Win. Do they now give the same length for both? It used to be 2.028" for the 30/30 and 2.005" for the 308. And for your info: 51 mm = 2.008". Well, on some occasions (as in caselength) a little bit short is better than a little bit long...

I believe the metric length is actually 51.8mm which is 2.039 inches. I believe the accepted metric designation is 7.62 x51R as Sues indicated.

MacD its a funny ol world to be sure.....MOST cartridges that I can think of that have a metric naming...like 7.62 x39mm 7x57 7.62x54 7.62x 61 5.56 bla bla bla bla bla etc etc are a slightly tapered case almost straight walled...whereas the .30/30 or .303 brit are tapered and rimmed.

now a good friend explained cartridge naming to me like this

7.62= the projectile diametre
x39mm = the case length

30= bullet diametre
/30 = grains of black powder used inside case

.270 or .308 or .223 etc = the bore diameter measured from the grooves
.303brit on other hand measured from lands (it would be .312)
all set out to confusticate us mere mortals Very Happy

sorry for confusion Suz what I should have put was the PROJECTILES fit nicely in 7.62x39mm case when I use the .308 expander ball to resize them (7.62X39MM CASES) Embarassed

Yes Elvis I think they make them up just to be creative sometimes. Most 30 calibre are actually. 308 and the. 303 is actually. 312. One of my favourates is the. 222, .223 and the. 22. All use. 224 diameter bullets.

Hornady handbook states 308 cartridge case is 2.015 inches and the 30-30 cartridge case is 2.039 inches
Lyman handbook says the same in inches, but they also give the metric equivalent of 7.62x51r for the 30-30 and 7.62x51 for the .308. Why this does not answer my original question and I'm now out and about measuring cartridges is because of the fly in the ointment about why a "x39" was used to size a 30-30 case. You're just trying to distract me while Elvis makes up a good excuse. Being a stand-off to you hole diggers for Elvis to sit in, has made me acutely aware of what I need to be doing right now. Sharpening my switch-gettin knife and making a bundle that will last a week or so to try and clean up the mess you've made out of this. I know the ladder is in need of repair but that's your problem now isn't it. You better make a tree house while you're at it. I'm gettin me some donuts and coffee and a comfy chair to watch the action.

may the
Suz
be with
you

At the risk of being up the tree for a time out:-). The 7.62 x 39 has a bullet diameter of .312 Just saying it would work for oversize lead in 30-30 as the more open neck would simplify loading these bigger bullets and as long as not FL sizing. Now shoulder angle is another issue. Haven't got my C of the World handy or I would check this out. Of course Elvis started this topic so he deserves the sterner switching.

48th & 49th lymans list 30/30 at TTL of 2.028"
48th & 49th lymans list .308 at TTL of 2.005"
Nosler 2012 edition has no TTL length, however it states max sammi length at 2.040"
for the brass in 30/30 and max OAL of 2.550"
Nosler 2012 edition has no TTL for the .308, however it states max length for brass
is 2.015" and OAL at 2.810"

My 1996 Hornady book shows Max case length 2.039" & TTL at 2.019" for 30/30.
same book shows for the .308 at Max case length 2.015" & TTL at 2.005"

Lymans 1967 also lists the 30/30 at max case length at 2.0395" and TTL 2.028" with COAL at 2.550"

I have many more manuals and vender books and they basically disagree with each other which does not surprise me in the least.

While a .38-40 is actually a .40 cal bullet and a .56-56 is really a .56" case mouth and a .56" base...

Ain't cartridge names fun!

as you will see the dies for 7.62x39mm have TWO expander balls one for using .311/312 size projectiles and one for .308

Well shucks Elvis! Don't know what that has to do with the 30-30 but anyway mine don't have two expander ball diameters but that's cool, mine only has the .308 but I use .310 (privi) bullets, maybe I should look around for some proper size bullets. Never really noticed the bullet size before on the dies. See you cleared things up and helped me out at the same time. It's those other vermin around the fire confusing the issue and causing trouble.....tell ya what Elvis I'll let you chase em up the ladder, and I'll give em a reminder on the way up. We'll have us a few cold ones and keep em up all night swatting mosquitoes and lookin for leg room.

Very Happy he he he Very Happy your an Evil Woman Suz Shocked
I only mentioned the other cartridge as I have loaded the same projectile in them.......I use the 151grn cast hp loads subsonic for bunnies and got the cast 160s at same time from same fella and loaded some up "just cause"
when I wanted to load a few rounds for buddies 30/30 they seemed to be the logical choice being flat nosed and on hand...and loaded to do 1900-2000fps the cast bit should be fine as they are gas checked....which is something that needs to be done at the base of the ladder Embarassed Embarassed after the last time Vince had baked beans Embarassed Embarassed well the less said about that the better Embarassed

And now we are so far that we better put a notice on top of this thread saying "NOT FOR STARTERS IN RELOADING"
they might get overheated brains...

And Elvis, it's not that wise to mix Kalasnikov's bullets in the .308 bullet pot. They are a little bit thicker and usually the same bulletweight requires less powder to stay on the safe side.

Too much sheep in the diet...
I'm tellin ya Elvis....just round em up and we'll get em atop that ladder in no time....Mosquitoes are getting hungry and I bought out all the repellent but don't quash the fire, we'll need that to see how many beers we've put down.

If there's anything that riles me more on this forum is the reading ability of the crew and how things are perceived. Course the spelling is interesting too. Most people don't know no from know or too from to or here from hear but that's beside the point. It's the undetected perception of the intended inflection that's the real culprit and without hearing a person speak the words he's (she's) written you have no idea of the intent, unless it's droned over a billion times. Some people have an interpretation conflagration that can stymie the language barrier into confusing diction going off into the ozone like a monkey throwin his own pooie at the zoo keeper. That's why there's lots of beer on hand, at the ready, and always cold but also why there's a ladder available to those hapless enough to fall on the wrong side of the fence during a windy session. If the monkey sht is growing ever larger on it's inevitable flight toward your face and it's too late to block it with the back of your nephew's head then it's time to fess up and just plain lie your way out of it.

After all the best marriages are based on lies aren't they? Your spouse is your cheer leader whether you're right or wrong, your spouse is there to square your shoulders and make sure you're the happy person again. No one wants to live with a grump and one way to assure that is to lie.....a lot.

I'll never marry....I hate lies....it just wouldn't work....Pass me another beer I think I'm on a roll here......Elvis.....hey..............Elvis....wake up...... Hey Man!! WAKE UP!!!.....BAAaaaaaBBBAAAA....bbaaaa..baaaa hey man I need another beer over here.....haveta do it myself....sheeesh....What? Oh go back to sleep....wipe your chin....
