I heard the Goex plant was being closed down in the USA, the last true commercial black powder producer. Then I heard the government was stepping in to force it to stay open due to "national need". I dont honestly know the true status of this.

But... I will say I've seen ALOT of people lately posting "how to make black powder" and other related articles.

To be honest, I'd like to try it someday from a curiosity standpoint. But... if SHTF, I still have 3 full cans of Goex FF sitting around.

Seems the WOKE protagonists have managed to make some changes to the world that are having quite an effect on firearms owners. To make matters worse, the morons who are responsible for mass shootings are not helping matters. I can’t help but think it behoves us as firearms owners to consider identifying these ars3holes within our community and take steps to “control” them.

Sorry if I’m talking crap right now…a mix of COVID and the anti-viral medication, Paxlovid, has got my head in a weird place.

DallanC ,just do it,lots of fun....not hard to do,and for a front stuffer, well actually for anything you dont need to compact it..just weigh your charge instead of using volume..my first batch I could get 45 grns in a 45/70 case..the 2nd batch can get 65grns in ok..... it goes bang and boolit flies out the end rather well.....what more does a fella need???
as said in other thread I learned a little bit about what I didnt know in reguards to using it..... your already 3 steps ahead as have used commercial stuff before.
if all else fails its good to chuck teaspoon fulls into camp fire or burn of foot path to envoke smells of hellsfire n brimstone LOL. Ive got link to really good page with instructions how to do it..linked it to here the other day.

well you need a large can for one roll of bog paper...my small can wasnt up to task and ended up doing single roll via 3 batches.... when blackened it was ground in marble mortar n pestle till as fine as talcum powder and basically looked like half a cup of soot.... still got slight brown tinge from slightly undercooked bits..but Im told thats ideal...it all went through a sieve any left over bits got reground so it is now superfine . will do the rest of the process later.

Not being BP person, I found the video very interesting and informative.

its mixed and waiting for sun to evaporate the hot water used to corn/mix it together...seemed really difficult to get the bog roll charcoal to absorb solution containing other two ingredients. And the Sulphur really doesn't like to dissolve... by giving it a wee go in mortar I've eliminated the lumps of Sulphur my first batch suffered with.
once sun comes back out and it starts to dry I will keep it moving around and breaking it up so it doesnt form a big lump..rather like weetbix in a breakfast bowl Vince LOL

Well, it seems with the shortage of components, and with no relief seemingly on the horizon, it appears we are resurrecting the skills and knowledge of our forefathers. There are videos out there now showing how to make black powder and how to make percussion caps using everyday items.

I’ve always found front stuffers interesting, but never felt the need to buy one. Maybe the future holds some retrograde steps for us…but can we use BP in modern cartridges and can we produce workable primers?

not all modern cartridges..but the straightwall or gentle taper ones are ok...the 303brit was origonally black powder..the 30/30 wasnt but would use it OK.
Im picking both the 7.62x39mm and 300 blackout would be fine as both have stuff all bottleneck.
powder took AGES to dry out...got caught with last lot I made up and didnt dry it enough so more than a bit paranoid about it now.
the powder goes fizz nicely if ignite a small spoonful with lighter so think it will be all good....

I've shot BP in the 458 Lott , many of the old calibers started as BP loads .. Duplex loads in the Lott are fun , put a small charge of fast pistol powder on top of the primer and fill with BP over it , burns much cleaner ..

Primers are the issue here moreso than other items , reckon we could go to flintlocks ..
