For us "cheap" shooters a dish towel works great for a shoulder pad.

Good ideas guys, but I’m looking for a more semi permanent solution.

Bushy, I’d need at least three tea towels to try and take the recoil and rock hard pad on my #5 .303 and that’s not really suitable when hunting.

Dallas, it would have to be one helluva thick leather glove to overcome the belt from the rock hard rubber “pad” mate…and even that probably wouldn’t be enough.

As can be seen in the pic, the actual recoil pad is smaller than the butt by maybe 15%-20%, and when it’s rock hard it really bites the shoulder hard.
