I have hunted SW Colorado GMUs 71 and 74 on four occasions, all during muzzleloader seasons. Most recently in 2001. Killed a deer the morning of 9/11 as a matter of fact..not hard to remember the date.
Not familiar with your specific areas but I can tell you that it will be high elevation and steep rugged country so if you can manage at least a couple of days to acclimate prior to opening morning you won't regret it. My hunts were all on foot and solo and I got 3 deer and had two opportunites for elk in 4 years so it is possible for a stranger to have some success. A local contact would sure be helpful though..unlike deer you really can't pick a likely spot and wait for elk. First order of business is to locate a herd which may take some miles of tough going.
Good Luck
