Hi, I'm going elk hunting for the first time this year in Colorado. A coworker and I have been looking at Little Cone, Lone Cone and Wilson Peak areas in the National Forest GMU 70. Do any of you have any suggestions as to which or any of these places are decent to hunt. We are from out of state and would like to get an idea if our chances are good of seeing/killing a bull there in the second season.

Thanks, Dale

Hey Dale, not familiar with the areas you are talking about.I have been to Colorado the past two years hunting in the White River national forest. The first year we went in muzzleloader season and my buddy killed a nice 5x6.Last year we went in the second rifle season and although we saw 2 bulls they were out of range and we didnt get a shot. We were more impressed with the early muzzleloader season but of course this takes about 2 preference points to draw.Sorry I cant be of any more help, best of luck to you.

I have hunted SW Colorado GMUs 71 and 74 on four occasions, all during muzzleloader seasons. Most recently in 2001. Killed a deer the morning of 9/11 as a matter of fact..not hard to remember the date.

Not familiar with your specific areas but I can tell you that it will be high elevation and steep rugged country so if you can manage at least a couple of days to acclimate prior to opening morning you won't regret it. My hunts were all on foot and solo and I got 3 deer and had two opportunites for elk in 4 years so it is possible for a stranger to have some success. A local contact would sure be helpful though..unlike deer you really can't pick a likely spot and wait for elk. First order of business is to locate a herd which may take some miles of tough going.

Good Luck

Thanks Guys, sorry I took so long to reply. I've been working overtime and haven't been able to respond. I appreciate the info and your quick resonses. Hopefully we at least will see some bulls, whether I get one being this is my first time out???? This will be a learning experience and a lot of fun.

Thanks again, Dale
