There really isn't enough lube to do much in the way of making a paste. I haven't had any trouble. Bullets are held firmly and the cases don't fail - can't argue with success.

I don't know much about the .223, but if your rifle is a semi-automatic you'll probably require small base dies. Every semi-automatic rifle I've owned called for them, some lever actions also. Best wishes.
