www.cnn.com/2006/LAW/1...index.html

A robbery suspect shot in the head with a 9mm, survives.

The 9mm might be a little light for concealed carry?

"The 9mm might be a little light for concealed carry?"

Don't make that assumption based on 1 incident; people have survived being shot by every pistol caliber. The human head is an amazing piece of hardware- it can withstand an enormous amount of damage and still keep its owner alive.

Even so the 9mmX19 is still at the bottom of my list for a carry calibre.

This is one of those topics that always ignites controversy.
IF we were restricted to only lead or FMJ bullets, I'd carry a .45, .44 or .38 Spl (the old "FBI" load), but since we have premium bullets, the 9 is as effective as any and better than most.

According to details found at Chuck Hawks, a 9mm 115 +P Cor-Bon has a "1 shot stop" rating of 91%, whereas a .45ACP 230 grain Hydra-Shok is 94%.

Admittedly, all that is subjective, but it is in line with other data I've read.

I find a 9 easier to carry and don't feel the least bit undergunned with one. I own- and can shoot quite well- a 1911, but it just don't carry well concealed with my build.

My whole point is don't ASSUME a 9 is too weak on the basis of 1 extraordinary case.

I agree, for self defence training I was taught to shoot for the chest area, not the head. I use Cor-Bon 40 S&W 150gr JHP in my G23, They shoot well in my gun and I feel real confident with this load for self defence. The main thing I think a lot forget is to practice, I try to shoot mine at least once a week. I have a range out back that makes it easier. Just like anything with fire arms, bullet placement is the key.

And I carry a 9mmX19 Firestar loaded with 115 JHP +P, but it still won't change my mind that it is at the bottom of my list for CCW. I too, have a .45 ACP that I would rather carry, but as you said. I can't carry it hidden on this light frame of mine either.

Geeeezzz...All I did was make a statement...Sorry Sad (not really Very Happy )

I don't know anything about personal carry weapon.

But, I am with the opinion that for a robbery suspect, the head is the least important part of their anatomy. Confused So a shot or two there can not be classified as a fatal hit Very Happy

When you compare the 9mm and 38 spl +p they are the same round. I figure that the police gave up the 38 spl in favor of the 357 and 9mm and the ones who chose the 9mm got the short end of the exchange.

I have not heard the follow up on the story, but it's a pretty interesting case, with court needing to decide whether the fella will be forced to undergo a surgical procedure to remove the bullet for evidence.
