I think there's probably a lot of other natural reasons for the giant beavers to have died off and their smaller brethren to have survived (although they barely survived the 18th & 19th century because of over-trapping, look at the comeback they've made) and the predators in that situation would be part of the natural selection process as well.

I wish the beavers in my lake were that big, it would make a lot biger target for me to hit
