Teebone51...I find no listing for Red Dot in any of my [limited] manuals. You might look and one of the Winchester powders like W-231 or WSF. Gelandangan has a good suggestion too. I've played with Alliant Power Pistol with fair results in .45 ACP. But still prefer W-231 or WSF

The Lyman Reloading Manual 45th Edition lists the following data for .45 ACP 185 grain bullets and Red Dot powder:

Suggested Velocity Max. Grs. Velocity
Starting Grs.

4.0 grs. 688 f.p.s. 5.5 grs. 928 f.p.s.

Hope this helps. All the best...
Gil

Ooops...Damn! Miss read my Lyman 48th manual. Gil is correct. There is a listing for Red Dot. My listing is for a .45 ACP 185 grain JHP. Starting at 3.5 grains @ 607 fps and a maximum of 6.1 grains @ 942 fps. And two listings for lead bullets as listed by Gil above.

Very Happy teebone -I'm sure that reddot will work quite well for you,as many shotgun types of powder have been used in pistol reloads for years.I personally like and am using a pet load with unique(alliant)my pet load is close to "stiff" with 7.0 grains pushing a 185grjhp.Definately a stopper, and accuracy is still there.I chose unique because it can be loaded in 9's,40's,45's,357's,44's,etc.,very versatile for handguns.hope this helps. Smile

I use W-231 on all of my .45ACP loads.

For only $16.00 a pound, I would go with the 231.

I can give you many loads that are spot on accurate at 25 or 50 yards using a quality 1911 Pistol.

Try not to fall in the rut of just using the powder you have on hand. It's ok to have a couple hundred pounds of powder varieties on hand but when the most accurate is not on your stock just bite the bullet and get the best powder for the load.
On the recommended loads stated as Maximum loads be sure to drop down 5 or 10% and work up from there to be on the safe side with your firearm.

For any of my Pistols, I start just a tad higher than the lowest load, and work up from there.
For punching paper, and being accurate, you will find that your best accuracy will come not more than a grain higher than minimum starting drops.

Also, for pistols, and using older powders, you can't beat Clays, or Unique.

Red Dot I have used for forty years on my trap shells.
It isn't known as a pistol powder, except for maybe some .45 Colt Loads.
