I have a Traditions Kentucky Long Rifle that has fixed dovetail sights on it. They are accurate enough to hunt with but I would like to have a fully adjustable sight. I have found what I want to put on. I am wondering how hard is it to swap them out. Is it as simple to tap the old one out of the dovetail and drive the new one in?

Check the height of the new rear sight and of the original rear sight. If there is much difference at all you may have to also change the front sight to compensate, otherwise there may not be enough adjustment to sight in the rifle.

I don’t know about the front stuffers but for the pistols I’ve been around some can be problematic !!!

I’ve seen them come out with simple tapping of a punch and others that wouldn’t budge when pounded with a BFH !!!
Those that are stubborn usually require a sight pusher of the proper configuration. (easier on the fingers too....Don’t ask !!!)

Aren't the dovetails in the barrel sometimes cut fractionally wider on one side, to allow easier insertion/removal of the sights? Seems I was told that somewhere down the line.

That is an interesting concept. I will have to see if I can research that.

Pumpkinslinger,
You are correct, many dovetails are cut to accept sights that are installed from right to left. Hope this helps. All the best...
Gil

Thanks Gil! Especially since I'm getting ready to replace the front sight on my SR9 with a Hi-Viz.

I thought about Hi-Viz also just for the "Old Eyes" factor, but I'm afraid it would ruin the look or the Kentucky Long Rifle.

I was thinking about a brass front sight to help with the seeing thing.

You could use sight paint (or nail polish) during season then take it off!!!
