I agree that anything mechanical can fail and muzzle control is critical to firearm safety. I have Remington 700s, Winchester 70s, Savage 110s and FN Mausers. When I unload these rifles, the muzzle is always pointed in a safe direction. So far, no problems. Take care...

the three golden rules for firearm safety are still the same no matter what sort of smoke pipe you shoot whether you are shooting a bb gun or a .50bmg
MUZZLE CONTROL
MUZZLE CONTROL
MUZZLE CONTROL
The accidental discharge issue is there but if we follow the rules no problem.

Maqwa: if you had a problem, did you contact Remington?
If not, then please state why as I think this Remington 700 stuff is getting all blown out proportion by the media (surprised).[/quote]

If you read my other posts Note my rifle whent to Remington for repair .
Note I also stated that It had not been altered until after the repair .
I also stated that after the trigger was repaired by remington shop -there was never another issue with the gun going off , even after the local gun shop modifyed the trigger to a lighter pull.

The media is NOT BLOWNING this out of proportion . How ever the problem has been there for decades and Now resolved with the new X pro trigger. The concern is that there may be still a problem gun out there .
Just because many of you never had a problem , does not make it a fact these older guns are safe. Buy a Mauser like Ruger or Winchester. They do not have an issue .Enough said Bye !!

Undoubtedly everybody is right with their indication of political views regarding the media. I worked in the media for many years and I know how, when they put their minds to it, they can and unfortunately do, sway the viewing audience any way they want. But......is there some credence to Mr. Walker's knowledge of a problem as far back as 1948? I pretty firmly believe so. At the age of 98 why would he not tell the truth? I firmly believe there is a known safety concern by a gentleman that knows the model 700 action/trigger/safety assemblies far better than myself, and undoubtedly better than the greater majority of this boards members! Personally, I will not let politics reflect on my take of this "perceived" problem. I do indeed believe there is a genuine concern, and well there should be.

I guess it would be to easy to just have Remington replace the triggers...........but possibility they voided the warranty, maybe that's why they never contacted Remington about the problem to begin with.

wtf A good journalist would have questioned this !!!

The CNBC piece kind of reminds me of the old 60 Minutes piece on the danger of jeeps turning over in curves. Turned out they had tinkered with the suspension before filming the "roll over". Shocked

I am amased at all the people who still instist that these rifles MUST HAVE BEEN ALTERED, because "theirs" is fine .
Well if the police state that their rifles too are going off, and they are not altered and too properly maintained, Maybe there is something wrong with the triggers !!! Maybe then some us are not talking out of our behinds . Dare some one to write them to say it is all human error and to control the muzzle .

Then too there are so many people that strongly think that Hitler's Germans in ww2 never had dealth camps where they burned so many Jews .

Well I drove a CJ7 with31'' oversized tires and know I could roll it over real easy .When it started to rain and the pavement was hot- you could get that in line six spin the tires too at Highway speeds .
But your right they did not come from the factory like that , and unlike the remington triggers you knew it .

Maqwa its interesting that you mention the germans and not the japanese. see people do forget.
maybe they are both great examples of human error.. and as I have previosly stated the 3 rules of gun safety are
muzzle control
muzzle control
muzzle control...

Gidday Maqwa...I agree with the sentiments of Elvis mate. He is not laughing or having a joke mate...his comment is quite serious.

None of us want to have a Accidental Discharge (AD)...but if it happens. Regardless of the reason it went off, so long as we observe the all important Safety Rules...which includes Muzzle Control...then chances are nobody will get hurt.

This of course does not abrogate the responsibility of the manufacturer to ensure that the product they provide is safe for its designed and intended purpose.

Cheers, Vince
