I haven't been around in a while, Life got in the way of the things life is supposed to be about. lol.

I plan on going Bow hunting for whitetail next year. I bought a PSE Stinger, updated it with a PSE Rest, Sight, on bow quiver, and a Vibracheck string stop. I also shoot with a release.

I don't remember what my numbers are for draw length, etc. off hand and the bow is in the shop getting serving put on for the string stop. I'll be adding vibration dampeners when I pick up the bow after the gun deer season and my dealer wont be bombarded with gun hunters guns that broke last year and are being brought in a few days before season opening. I do pull a little over 40 lbs though.

I shoot carbon arrows with 125 grain field tips so far. I don't have have an arrow weight totaled up yet but I plan on staying with the heavier broad head. I'm a rifle guy and I like heavy bullets for whitetail. Hence the heavy tips. My bow dealer actually recommends the heavier heads around here.

I'm going to attempt to practice in the barn or basement this winter to keep in shape and fix my form. I still have a little trouble with the follow through after the release.

So I figured I would ask you guys what you think about broad heads. The Seasons are going to be coming to a close soon and I figured I would ask the question while its fresh in your minds.

The guys at work have stated the Monetech G5s, the thunderheads. The dealer has recommended the Thwacker or shwacker or whatever it is and one of my buddies has taken does in our CWD zones with Rages.

I haven't researched these to hard yet, I don't know if 125s are offered in the above mentioned broad heads. I'm a bit old fashioned and like the appeal of the solid broad heads over the mechanicals. I'm staying away from the put together types if I can. I'll be saving up for these and probably more arrows. I'm on my second batch of six arrows and at almost $10 each without pretty glowing knocks. It'll have to wait till closer to fall.

Any advise or rave reviews will be helpful in narrowing my selection of broad heads to research.

jbird, I don't know that there are many bow hunters on this forum. I shoot 100gr to get a flatter arrow trajectory than I do with 125gr broadheads. I also shoot mechanical but for probably the wrong reasons. I figure the mechanicals shoot closer to the field tips I practice with and I wanted to avoid having to practice with broadheads and adjust my sight because of the change in point of impact. I also like the larger cutting radius of mechanical as they are more lethal if you miss the vitals. They do rob some energy to open and can deform when hitting bone. However, the deer in the South are not as large as the deer up North which may be a consideration for you. I’m starting to take up elk hunting and will have to make the switch to fixed. There is no way I’m going to hunt an animal as big boned as an elk with a mechanical. The recommendations I’ve gotten for fixed blade is 3-blade Muzzy. This is what I’m about to transition to. Once I transition, I’ll use them for deer also.

I use to live in Wi and hunted in Tomah, anyway, I still have my old bear whitetail that has never failed me, I shoot 100 or 125gr broadheads and never had a problem. I bought this in the early 80's and never had a problem with it. I thought about upgrading to the latest and greatest, but what for, my old Bear 39" 60lb does the job for me everytime.

Sure my old aluminum arrows probably look like telephone poles to the newer generation, but after 17 deer with it, I can't complain after all these years.

When I did practice, I bought bales of hay in the basement, set up the target and taught my boy's the joy of bow and arrow.

You can't argue with success! Some of the new bows are tempting but I too have stuck with my older Mathews Solo-Cam. In the last few months, I have gone to carbon arrows to pick up a bit more velocity downrange and a mechanical release. With the arrow rest and release I have, I can't switch between different arrow types.

Thanks! I am waiting for the moderators to allow me in to read. I'll look into it. The G5s with interchangable practice look great but I'll have to buy another target.
