An article/pics on the flooding in Australia. The majority of this flooding is with 500 km max of where I live...but luckily, although we have had heaps of rain, we have no flooding at this time.

Australian Flooding

Cheers, Vince

Great photos! I read one article about the flooding and they were talking about the snakes, one guy said the snakes were washed out of their territory and they were pissed off snakes looking for high ground. Don't sound good, The picture of the guy in the bar pressure washing his booze bottles.....bummer man.

Vince,

Glad to hear that you are ok. We could use some of that rain. We have not had much, other than a drizzle for about 4 months.

Down here, we need some of that cooler weather, that winter is supposed to bring. Last night I had to get up about midnight and turn the air conditioner on and set it for 72 degrees (F) so it would cool off enough to get some sleep.

Cary

I heard about this on the radio driving home from work the other day. I didn't realize how bad it is until I saw these pictures. Glad to hear you're OK Vince.

Good to hear you and Geland are not directly affected Vince. Although I suspect food prices will not be falling any time soon. Thanks for the photo spread.

Glad to hear all is well for you Vince. It looks pretty nasty down there.

Cary I would be more then happy to send you some cooler weather. It was -16* yesterday morning when I crawled out of bed. Just let me know where to send it.

Yah, thats Australia, land of contradiction, we can have flood and draught,
rain and fire on the opposite side of the country at the same time.

I am lucky to live and work in the "higher" suburbs of Sydney.
If I get any flood at all, the rest of Sydney would be under water.

Thanks for the link to the great pictures. Water is all powerful! When mother nature acts like this, you just have to get out of her way until she moves on.

Yep Suz...the snakes are heading for higher ground...and a lot of cases that means inside the roofs of houses that aren't covered.

The snake you see in the pic is a Red Bellied Black snake...normally not aggressive, he will get right out of your way unless he feels threatened. Only problem is, if you try and stop him from getting out of the water, well, he will bite...and he is extremely venomous...and deadly. This fella (in the pic) looks to be approaching 2 metres long, and at the thickest , maybe the thickness of your forearm. As a comparison, the road markings under him are about 4 inches wide. I have seen heaps of these snakes, and never had a problem with them, but I would not be happy seeing this guy heading towards me in the water. Definitely butt pucker time.

That would a fair assessment mate...and its getting bigger...although some of the river levels are starting to drop, whilst others are still rising.

Prices are already on the way up mate...greedy middle man !! I wouldn't mind so much if I knew that the producers (farmers) were getting the extra profit, but they ain't.

Vince and gelandangan, I'm happy to hear you are both on higher ground. Take care and I hope the weather clears up. Last summer we had some flooding west of here about 140 km but nothing like that.

Gidday Cary....not yet mate...the ground is saturated because of the amount of rain we have had, consequently the water just isn't soaking in as it normally would, hence the massive run off and floods.

We are just gonna have to wait for the rivers to do their thing...move the water to the coast and out to sea. In some cases mate...in the inland regions...this could mean a journey of a few thousand miles down stream till the water reaches the coast. This is not a bad thing because what it will mean is the river systems get a good flush out, which they have not had for quite some years. Additionally, the Artesian Basin will get a much needed top up, meaning that those that really on bore water in the outback will be in good stead as well.

All in all, Australia has received a very much needed "top up" to its fresh water supplies that should last for quite some years if we are lucky. Its just a shame that those caught up in the flood regions have suffered as a result.

Cheers, Vince

What you need now Vince is a cyclone to blow all the trees over.
They seem to fall over easier when the ground is sodden,
and its that time of year.
Oh, thats right its the wet season and all the cane toads are complaining about a little water.
WHAT ABOUT THE CRICKET. Get your priorities right, no one likes being beaten by the poms.
End rant.
