If I'm on legal land and you went near my dog with a bullet, well I hope your wearing a vest, the bullet proof type.

And no I don't use her to muster deer. She's a GWP that points them and will take down a wounded deer as she did the other day when my mate badly placed a shot.

If you want to know what real hunting is then go out with a small pack of dog's and an eight inch knife after wild pig's, and get your self a 200lb wild boar. Now that gets the blood pumping.

I have one Walker coon Hound, and I coon hunt him once in a while. When I do, I don't go while deer season is going on, because I don't want to mess things up for myself or other deer hunters.
Even though I don't think it bothers the deer much, if a dog does chase it a little I don't think the deer leave the area. I ask for permision to hunt on other peoples land like all hunter should do, but I can't control where that dog goes after I turn him loose. Some times he goes where he should not be and I have to retrieve my dog and once in a while he even gets on a deer. It is illegal to shoot another mans hunting dog unless it is destroying your livestock, atleast in Missouri. The owner of the dog can get in trouble thought for tresspassing, or hunting out of season, or hunting a animal that it is illegal to pursue with dogs. Remeber that because that there is more than one way to skin a cat and keep yourself out of trouble if there is a person that is running dogs, or hunting illegally on your property. But probably the best thing try if you have a problem with it is just talk to them befor you shoot there dog or do something that you shouldn't. I read in one forum that carying a pistol openly is a good idea, well I do when I coon hunt, a stainless double action .357 ruger, maybe I will tell you what got me started doing that sometime in another forum.

Thanks for such a great forum

Just curious to the fact of how many dog hunters use tracking collars?

Also, would some of these land owners that disapprove of dogs being on their property reconsider thinking about shooting a dog with a tracking collar?

Me personally, I draw the line at a collared dog. I only put down strays. I used to raise dogs to hunt deer here in Louisiana. I quit because of all the confrentation. I understand the point from both sides now as I deal with this on my own land these days. I know alot of dog hunters that are going to a tracking devise. To me, this says they are trying to do the right thing.

Honestly, and I know that some will disagree here but, there needs to be a mutual ground to make all parties happy.

I would suggest if you run dogs in a particular area that you get out during off season, introduce yourself to the area landowners and show them that you are trying to do the right thing. Put tracking devices on the dogs. Don't be tresspassing when people aren't looking. Go and ask permission. Respect the landowners and more than likely, they will respect you and your dogs.

It's still legal here .. I dont have a problem with it personally , but that is how I grew up , BUT , the club I am in runs dawgs ONE day a week on the club land ..
Now anyone will tell you , that knows me I am a dawg man .. I love dawgs .. They're doing what dawgs do .. Kinda like yelling at your dawg fer barkin' , that's what dawgs do .. bark ...
I , really , have a problem with the way the dawg owners in the club , treat and handle their dawgs .. Therefore , I will not rejoin the club , I don't think ..

I don't personally have a tracking colar, but I use one once in a while if I am hunting with someone that has an extra collar. I can't really see spending that much money on a tracking collar for my one hound that doesn't usually get that far from me, that I can't hear him. I do however have two reflective collars on my dog, just incase one breaks or comes off, that is easily visible in the dark if light hits them and both of the collars has my name, address and telephone number on them. I always ask for permission if I think that there is a chance of getting on another persons property. But there has ben times that my dog has went across the fence because he don't pay any attention to those fences and at 2:00 A.M. I don't think that I wan't to call that farmer and get him out of bed so I go get my dog and get out. I respect land owners that don't want me to hunt and there are alot more of those people than you might think. But when my dog does go there I just catch my dog and get out, and that is the best thing that I can do.
One night I lost my dog with a tracking collar on him, I came back the next day and was driving around looking for him but didn't find him the day after that I was looking for him and I saw him laying in someones front yard. I stoped and talked to the people for a little bit and they said that I had a real freindly dog. I had never met these people befor but after talking to them for a while they said that I could hunt anytime I wanted. The tracking collar on the dog was busted and my dog had a cut on his shoulder about 9 inches long, I'm guessing that he fell off a bluff or got hit buy a car. That dog was a long way from were I turned him loose when I found him. I am very thankful that those people did not shoot my only hunting dog when they saw him in there yard. I always wondered why they didn't call me when they found him, because my phone number was on his collar.

One night I was hunting and I saw some people loading some cattle, I called the landowner from my cell phone and he called the police. Those people went to jail for cattle theft. That farmer was glad me and my dog was on his property that night.
I think we should all praise the landowners that let hunters hunt on their property, I took some of the people that let me hunt x-mas presents last month, they really liked that.

first off all land is no tresspassing in missouri without permission. second it is illegal to run deer with dogs in missouri.

its one thing to have a coon or rabbit dog jump a deer time to time and its another thing to turn your dogs loose to run deer on purpose.

i will shoot any dog tracking collared or not i catch running deer on MY PROPERTY. get that ITS MY PROPERTY.

i grew up with black and tans and beagles at one time 100 beagles and ive had dogs run deer before myself {very easily broke from doing that}. my issue is people who are purposely running deer with dogs on MY property out of season illegally. i spoke to my conservaqtion man and he told me i cant shoot them without going to court and my response is lets go to court.

explain to the judge how you were on my land illegally running deer with your dogs illegally.

Its obvious that this is a heated subject with lots of personal opinions. Lets remember that its hard to find fault in someone hunting legally with a method you oppose.

Here in Utah its illegal to let your dogs run without being leashed, let alone chasing deer... in fact there was a HUGE stink in the paper reciently in Park City (where the olympics were held), where a Sheriff came across a couple dogs that had a large mule deer buck cornered and were trying to kill it. According to the report the sheriff tried to call and wave off the dogs, they wouldnt do it, so he legally shot one (I guess the other ran off before it could be shot too). The owner was informed of what happened and now lawsuits are being filed, the Mayor is in an uproar (shes an animal rights advocate) and wants the cops to carry tasers for any future problems like this. Utterly rediculous. The sheriff was following the law, end of story.

I've been 100% anti-dog chasing deer but I've reciently had to rethink my stance a tad. I am ok with guys running hounds on Mt Lions... I've personally been with a guy running coons with hounds. In both of those cases its indeed dogs doing what they are trained to do and if thats ok then I guess running deer where legal should be ok too. In a case of racoons or lions however, they will goto tree or hole when cornered.. what do deer do? Just curious.

As for neighborhood dogs out running wild, those have no business out chasing wildlife of any kind.

Yes, this is a very touchy subject. Since laws are different from state to state on this subject, we will get many different opinions and responses.

Here in the south, it is a tradition. People here were raised running deer with dogs. Our deer population exceeds most of the country. They are plentiful. Our land is very thick due to massive clear cutting and alot is impossible to hunt, except with dogs.

Here in Louisiana, we just made it by law, The Right to Hunt. Hunting with dogs is a part of this Right. Therefore, we stand behind ALL our hunters, no matter the means of how they take game.

The dog issue here is in the public eye, also. Alot of people here are against it. They say that all dog hunters are doing illegal things. Well, that is not neccessarily true. See, dog hunters have to put themselves in the public eye more than still hunters. There are people who do not follow the rules in all types of hunting. Dog hunters just seem to get hit harder. I'm sure that there are plenty of still hunters that trespass, which is illegal. They just can do it without being seen. Therefore, they stay out of the public eye. Doesn't mean that they aren't breaking laws.

When dogs run deer, you just never know where they will go. Deer will move hard and fast and cover many miles when being ran. See, people will try to run small tracts of land with large dogs and that gets them in a bind. I believe that in states where dog hunting for deer is legal, there needs to be tighter restrictions on what you can and can't run given the size of your property or lease. Beagles is the key here. Walkers run deer too fast and far. They are great for 1000 acre tracts or better. Anything else, beagles are the answer.

Honestly, alot of the problem is not the dog owners but, rather the standers. It is hard to get good standers that will get off their BUTT and catch the dogs to prevent them from getting on someone else's property. No, that doesn't matter to the landowner but, it is something the dog hunters are working on.

I don't run dogs but, that is my CHOICE. I support ALL means of hunting and the means of which it is done. Especially here in Louisiana. No matter of the game you take, we are all bloodbrothers because first and foremost, we are hunters. We must work together to stop the infighting. We must preserve our RIGHT TO HUNT!

If your ok with using dogs to run one type of game you cant say no to another. Its pretty simple in my mind. Cant say running dogs isnt good and do it for another animal.

It kinda works both ways some people want to hunt rabbit with dogs and others deer. What makes your thought that running deer is wrong but rabbits are ok ?? Seems contradictory to me personally. Confused

I personally dont plan on using dogs for anything. Not because I wouldnt trust my dog after I trained it but because I dont trust it not to chase a animal around and wind up getting shot :(.

I am however thinking about possibly getting a dog in the future to track downed deer and other large game. The dog will be leached at all time and I will be close by so I'll feel more secure that my dog is alright. Very Happy

Before you ask reason I say its ok to use a dog to track a hit animal is that as sportsmen we got to make sure we dont kill and lose a animal and any possible way that help us to find the hit deer makes out job as sportsmen easier Wink

im a property owner albeit a small one.

i have people trespass weekly, i have people kill game out of season weekly, i have people illegally running deer with dogs on my property, i have people shoot my pot belly pigs in there pens.

you want to know why hunters have such a bad rep?

because there are so many bad hunters and the good hunters defend them.

i wont alllow anyone i havent known for 20 years to hunt on me just because im tired of people killing turkeys out of season just because they can.

notice i posted about dogs running deer in missouri where it is illegal yet i have people here defending running deer with dogs illegally {reread the posts and look at the answers}

until all hunters stop friends from breaking the laws while hunting then the antihunters have real complaints about hunters.

how many people do YOU know who kill game out of season? why do they keep getting away with it? because we the hunters allow it.

Spacedone,

Sorry to hear about your pigs Sad

And yes a problem is hunters defend other hunters even when they are at wrong. I am luckly right now no hunters I hunt with break the law Smile

As for fishermen breaking laws up here it happens all the time kinda makes me sick. My brother and I havnt resorted to break laws to fish for pretty much anything but people do especially for salmon up here. Sad Me while salmon fishing normally arnt fishing I'm just enjoying my time and my vest looks like the time the NMR wears with how the patchs are set up (didnt plan that though). So when I'm near by most fishermen stop what they are doing and act like they arnt breaking any laws Very Happy

Anyways yes dogs are illegal in some places and not in others. But if we let people break the laws and do what hunters like thouse do we are distorying our sport. I think we should as hunters should weed out the pests and get rid of them like what Spacedone said we shouldnt allow it. Very Happy

Mind you I like Ontario's laws for breaking hunting laws. There are quite heafty fines. Smile Funny people still break them and go to jail and yet more people keep doing it. wtf

I have to agree with you here spacedone ,, bad hunters is why it's hard to hunt private lands anymore .. I know many landowners who dont hunt , and dont allow anyone to hunt the property for that very reason . People , in general , not all mind you , no longer respect other peoples property , or their restrictions on hunting the property .. All it takes is one person to leave a gate open , and allow livestock to get out , and no one will ever hunt that property again ..
And I dont blame the property owners one bit ..
Part of the reason is the people in general , when I grew up out in the middle of nowhere , we all grew up on and around farms , most hunters were rural people , and it was a non issue , people knew the consequences of open gates and such , without being told ..
Now , you have many people coming in from cities where they no nothing of farm and rural life , and all they are there for is to hunt .. they just dont give a damn , as long as they can hunt .. If you can call it that ..
Jack
