But for the non-Geeks here, the public key is a certificate issued to web pages, while many use VeriSign etc, and are well known, the certificates can be signed by anyone, and sharing your public key into other peoples certificates mean that you trust their site. So if you share that public key with your friends, if your a IT guy, then your friends wont get a "Danger get me out of here" page like Firefox and other web browsers give when you go on a "untrusted" web page.
