A friend has asked me to be his hunting partner for Elk in NM. I told him I would be happy to do it. We would like to put in to be drawn for one area then return to that same area (if drawn) year after year. We are thinking one of the zones in Area 2 or 5. This is a new adventure for me. I'm going to start scouting this Fall. Any suggestions?

A friend hunted SW of Chama, NM a few years ago and he saw lots of elk and took a fine bull. I believe it was a private land hunt.

Another place you might wish to look and is only a little longer drive, is the area west of Trinidad, CO. They even have January hunts. I did a Jan cow hunt in 2010 (private land) and was pleased; there is also public land to hunt from there up toward Walsenburg.

Thanks AZHunter. We are going to try Mescalero NM on the Indian Reservation. I look into these areas next year for cow tags.
