You've got to love the efforts made in preserving at least some of our history.

I'm told that I saw them bring her home in Wilmington but since I was 4 years old I really don't remember it.

Gotta love a boat that when all guns are fired broadside she sideslips under recoil some 35'.....so I've read. Do the math...85,000t of displacement hull moving 30' = how much felt recoil?

Shocked

Not sure but I bet the consussive wave would snuff any living thing on deck at the time.

I started wondering how much the ship would move due to recoil and found this:

Yep- I stand corrected, they don't move an inch! Or do they- I aint good with numbers et al.

I also noticed no one is on deck. I wonder if the blast/overpressure wave is even survivable!

I'm amazed and the accuracy of these guns grouping too at insane ranges from 25,000 to 36,000 yards! That's around 20 miles shot from a boat!

I feel lucky to do that good at 25 yards...

Bathtub? Ships are furnished with "rain lockers"...

Iowa has a custom tub for FDR on board! And if he was in it when they shot that practice fish at her I bet it turned to a bubble bath!

Last I read it was NINE FEET to the side when all nine "guns" fired at the same time. my dad was on a carrier(V2 Arresting gear) and said when the Five inch "guns went off it would just about knock you down wiht the pressure wave. If she is fairly close I will go and visit as I am able. The Missouri will ALWAYS BE AROUND as it was on her deck where the Japanese officially surrendered to General McAurthur in Tokyo Bay as I seem to recall.

Haha Haha Haha

Actually from what I read, as back then they had radio silence and the destroyer that accidentally (they thought is was an assassination attempt) fired the torpedo was hesitant at first on contacting the USS Iowa for fears of breaking radio silence.

FDR was notified of this and demanded he be wheeled over to the side that the torpedo was coming from, meanwhile the capt of the Iowa ordered full speed and managed to out maneuver the torpedo.
