Thinking about getting one of these in .308 and was wondering if anyone has purchased one and if they like it. does it shoot well ect...

addict, welcome to HuntingNut. The new entry level rifles from Remington, Mossberg, Savage, and Ruger are much improved. I feel it may very well be a personal choice. Cycle the actions, check the weight & balance, comfort when shouldered. May of these entry level rifles have molded stocks, some are father flexible. Because of the smoother action, lighter weight, and stiffer composite stock, I spent a little more and got the entry level Sako - a Tikka T3 Lite. It is a real shooter - 1/2 MOA with handloads.

Also check and see if they have both short and long actions. Some use a long action for a .308 which eliminates one of its advantage. You might reconsider and get a .30-06 if you can't get a short action in the gun you want. The .30-06 handles heavier bullets better, e.g., 180gr or heavier, and still has more varitey of poduction ammo choices than the .308.

see how it shoulders..some of the base level remingtons are a right pig to shoot offhand.

thanks for the imput fellas, Just been reading the reviews, blogs, exc. they seen to be pretty accurate for the price. will be using it for hunting but eventually want to rebarrel it with criterion barrel in .260 ackley. hopefully boyds or some other company will make some after market stocks.

well that being the case..talk to who you want to do the re barrel job and make sure its feasible..you may well find a older 2nd hand rifle maybe a better option as a re barrel and save yourself some $ along the way

Excellent point, Elvis. A used Rem 700 or Savage may be a better platform to accomplish a barrel upgrade with. You don't want to buy a low-end rifle then rebarrel it with a higher quality barrel - you won't get your money back out of it. Almost every gunsmith nows how to make the Remington 700 action shoot great!

All good points. I would check out the used gun racks in a few gun shops and see what is available. It may be possible to get an excellent used Remington 700 (or Winchester Model 70 or Savage Model 111 or 111) for the price of a new Model 783. All the best...
