A birch tree and a beech tree were growing in the forest. One day the birch tree looked down and saw that a sapling had sprung up between himself and the beech tree.
"Is that a son of a beech or a son of a birch?" he asked the beech tree.
"I don't know." replied the beech.
At that moment a woodpecker flew in and landed on the sapling. The beech tree asked the woodpecker if he would sample the sapling and tell them if it was "a son of a birch or a son of a beech". The woodpecker did his duty and when he was done the beech tree said "Well, what is it?"
The woodpecker looked up and said with authority, "I can tell you for certain that it is not a son of a beech and it is not a son of a birch."
The woodpecker paused a moment and added "But it is the best piece of ash I have ever had my peck** in!"

Haha, I gotta say that's one of the best nature jokes I've ever heard!
