Reinforces the know what your target is before you pull the trigger, one of the most important rules in shooting / hunting.

My neck of the woods...sorry to hear it. My Dad did that once on his first deer hunt. He didn't kill anyone, but he shot because he saw movement, it ended up bein a doe instead of a buck. He missed and was standing on a large stump, when he got down he was facing a game warden. "Didja get him?" "uh Nope" "Well that's good cause I was preparing to write you a ticket" He hasn't forgotten that, and tells the story over and over and over. He had hunted birds before but never deer. His reaction was a shotgun reaction, be fast or it'll be too late. Well that slowed him down.

Not going to point any fingers in either direction...just a terrible accident that could have easily been avoided.

QUOTE:-Ochoa was wearing dark-coloured clothing when an Oregon man hunting for bear with his 12-year-old grandson saw something moving in the brush and fired one shot from a .270-calibre rifle, striking Ochoa, the Marion County Sheriff's Office said.

The sheriff's office said the hunter, Gene Collier, 67, hasn't been charged and said the shooting appeared to be accidental but turned the case over to the local district attorney's office. -:UNQUOTE

It is sad but what bothers me the most is in red.

Maybe it's time that Natural Resources/DEC etc get involved and remove his hunting license. Most hunting rules/regs say that you have to identify your target.

No such thing as an "accident". It was a negligant discharge at an unverified target. Rules 2 and 3 violated. Instant boot in the a88, loss of firearm, license and go to jail just that fast.

Bear hunting with a .270???

Read this one and you be the judge.

www.cbc.ca/fifth/2010-...hdouspart/

I am skeptical but I can't go as far as no reasonable doubt with respect to intent. Still I think criminal negligence should have stuck as, in the final analysis, she "thought" he was a bear. In my mind you must know for certain before you pull the trigger. Perhaps too black and white a distinction for some people but when you are in command of a deadly weapon there shouldn't be any grey areas.

Won't debate bear hunting with a .270 , but agree wholeheartedly with all else Stovepipe says.

I read this the day it was posted and on Monday went to the local rifle range to check out the sights on the rifles as well as myself. Bought a new 7MM Mag I bought two years ago and hadn't fired, a story for another time.

Anyway, this might be a little long so I'll apologize now but this event brought the murder above to mind. As firearm enthusiasts I believe we all have a responsibility to help folks who are interested in learning and also to speak out when people use firearms inappropriately or unsafely.

So, I am there getting set up and another couple of guys show up with high dollar .22's and a couple of other rifles and set up down at the opposite end. I get a couple of shots in and two more show up, and I thought Monday would be slow and quiet - oh well.

This guy , and the woman that was with him unload an arsenal 6 rifles, 5 handguns and a mess of targets. So we all stop to allow him to set up his targets, 8 of them 4 at 25 yards and 4 at 100 yards. Once they were set up he was back at the firing line and without any word he started shooting an AK47 clone. Now where I'm from one announces the firing line live before one starts shooting, But, OK there were very few there and I let that pass.

I am going to try to shorten this a little bit, but the longer I was there the more pissed I was getting at this idiot, he made a lot of clay jump, but I scanned his targets several times through my scope and saw that very da-m few of his rounds hit the target let alone anywhere near a bulls-eye so OK this guy is loved by the folks who make ammunition.

Then, after about an hour of putting up with this idiots antics, he announces that he is going to check the reliability of his AK47 clone on full auto and puts what was at least a 30 round clip in it.

Well, he lets lose with it and lost control of the firearm-couldn't get his finger off the trigger knock down my targets and winded up ventilating the roof of the firing line.

After getting up off the ground, and I am in no way in any shape to have to get on the ground, I had a few words with the guy. I hope I never see him again, but if I do I will have a new arsenal to play with. Oh by the way the guys with the real expensive stuff had to get off the ground too, but only because they fell them laughing while I explained the fact s of life to the idiot.

You had to be there to really appreciate all that happened, but I take firearm ownership seriously and this guy was a poster boy for firearm restrictions.

Anyway, I hope this guy never takes up hunting or we will be reading more stories like the above.

Holy crap Les!!!

Look- same goes for home defense as it does for hunting. VERIFY the target. Here is Ca you kill someone in your home w/ a gun you go to jail- that fast and you might get out if its justified. What's the difference if you kill someone hunting when you aimed and yank the trigger? NONE.

Had some idiot close his pump with his finger on the trigger at the trap range sunday- right next to me. I almost clubbed him with my Baikal. Man that was loud, charge hit the lawn right in front of me and damn godo thing we were at 16y or it would have hit concrete and got someone. RO chewed him good. I pooped myself a little.

There are NO accidental dicharges- they are all due to negligence.
