I shoot some oddball military calibers and often have to make cases from something else. When it became difficult to find 7.65x53mm Belgian or Argentine Mauser cases, I made them from .30-06 brass. Same with 8mm Mauser cases. For the 7.5x55mm Schmidt-Rubin, it was necessary to find .284 Winchester brass. I run some cases through a trim die, cut off the excess, resize the case, trim, chamfer and deburr and am good to go. Since 1970, I have used an RCBS RockChucker press and it still looks like new. Anyone making ammo from something else? All the best...

Nothing quite that elaborate, but I've made quite a few .243 and 7mm-08 from .308 brass! At the time 7mm-08 brass was HARD to find in "my neck of the woods!". After that I just had to make some .243 Razz

Hi,

Some of the hardest cases I've had to make to date are a 6mm Ackley from 30/06 cases and 22/250 cases from 30/06 cases. Another case I had problems with was making 221 fireball cases from 223. It wasn't to bad with unfired cases but had problems with fired cases.

The only problem I have encountered was breaking decapping pins due to really heavy crimped primers or off-center flash holes. I took care of that problem by using a Lee depriming tool. They are advertised as unbreakable. When you do break one, Lee replaces it at no charge. All the best...

Used to make 7 BR and 221 FB. Still do 22/243 Middlestead. I do make a personal wildcat similar to the 17 Squirrel. Mine is a 17 AH, shortened 0.3". I also do 7, 6.5 & 6 MM TCU but, those are really easy. Very Happy

7.5SR new brass is available from Graf and Son for about $28 per hundred.
I make .303 Savage cases from .30-30 cases by adding a sleeve off a .40 S&W case just ahead of the rim, then fire forming, also can make 6.5x54MS cases the same way, just turn down the rim to the correct diameter and cut a new extractor groove at the same time while the case is in a 1/2" drill or drill press, even easier if you have some type of small lathe.

I make 257 weatherby cases from 7mm cases. They end up being a little bit short but beats the cost of weatherby brass.

bubbadoyle, I am just getting into the 257 Weatherby, what is your process for forming the cases out of 7mm brass

I just full length resize and then load. The first load is a fireforming load but in my gun I believe I used 65gr IMR 4831 and 100gr Nosler ballisitc tips for the fireforming and was hitting praire dogs out to 300 yards. Need to work loads up though as 7mm brass is a little heavier resulting in slightly less case capacity. I love the 257 weatherby hope you enjoy yours. Can't wait to shoot mine through my brothers chrono as I have a custom built gun with a 28" barrel. Will be interesting to see what the extra barrel lenght is doing for me. My problem is my brother lives 1000 miles away in Wyoming and when I am there all I do is hunt so I don't get to shoot the gun through the chrono. Back to the subject please let me know if this works for you. The gunsmith that built my gun suggested the 7mm brass.

Thanks Bubbadoyle, the cost of the weatherby brass so far is the only down side to the gun. I've been loading the 115gr barnes triple shock, and have been very pleased. If nothing else you should be able to reach out and touch something with the 28 inches. Thanks again

I make 2 different cases, both wildcats
309 JDJ from 444 marlin cases
and 30 herrett from 30-30 cases
both of these are for a contender pistol

wasnt sure where to post/ask this...trying to be cheap and form 257 weatherby out of 7mm rem mag brass...what am i doing wrong here? im kinda new to case forming so be gentle please...hope the photo comes out

From the looks of your photo, the case neck was not annealed. Either way if you use 7mm Rem, 300 H&H or 300wby brass, the neck has to be annealed first than FL size case (normal die in either 7mm, or 300H&H-wby) than trim to length than fireform in YOURguns chamber.
