I have tried without luck for a couple of years to get drawn for pronghorn in NM and WY. Threw my name in the hat for a Barbary sheep hunt in Guadeloupe Mountains of NM (GMU 29, 30) just for grins and got drawn. After watching some youtube hunts in that area, I'm not sure I am that lucky. Very rugged, cliff like terrain (link below). Sheep falling off cliffs after being shot, 6+ hours to hike a ram out with 3 guys. I've got a lot of workout and training to do. Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated. DIY, Guided, Locations, etc. Thanks in advance.

Looks like you have some work ahead of you mate...that looks like real mean unforgiving country.

Horses would help...won't get you all the way but at least you could cut down the mileage on foot. I've hunted mulies in country like that and it was easier than in that video but no cliffs, just very steep terrain rocks upon rocks you have to go slow just to walk. I wouldn't want to negotiate across those canyons an onto a drop-off and then back again ooooff brutal on the toes (if you can stay upright). My advice....just try and find a way to cut the mileage, get a young guide cause an old guide will turn your legs into butter. Guessing a young guide will be more sympathetic....specially if you stick a few dollar bills in his g-string.

bit like our Thar but without the snow and ice...our fellas would leave those ones in the dust as they scale cliffs. good binos are a MUST 10x50s that are crystal clear and a spotting scope so once you find something with binos you can see if its worth the effort. a piece of closed cell foam about 24" square to sit you but on while glassing.......let your eyes do the walking for you, find animal, close range, fire shot
,then retrieve.
keep off skylines
stay hydrated
take paracetamol as long periods behind glasses can cause headaches, good glasses reduce this.

Suz, Elvis, thanks for those tips. Things I didn't think of. At least I have 8 months to get in shape. I wish I could talk with some locals but there aren't many folks in that area. I found a couple guys that have done this hunt locally so am compiling a list of questions.

Here, here! I've also found a hunting buddy to go with me. I'm hiking the hills in our neighborhood with a 50# backpack. I need to start lifting weights to. Good to have you back M2!

Elvis you're right round IS a shape. It's the best shape for getting down a mountain, but not a good one for going up the mountain. Smile
